One such donation was in 1881 when he gifted a revolver to Mayor James M. Farley of Smithfield. This particular revolver is now on display at Smithfield’s Museum of History and Industry. In 1912, Captain John Waddell donated a shotgun to townspeople in commemoration of their victory over Spanish forces during the Battle of Alamance River. A total of thirty-six shotguns were given to local citizens in 1912. In 1927,Captain Rufus Gifford donated an air rifle to townspeople in commemoration of their victory over Confederate forces at Kings Mountain. This particular air rifle is currently on display at the Duke University Pistol Museum in Chapel Hill, North Carolina. In 1955,Captain Lawson Hargrave donated a Colt pistol to townspeople in commemoration of their victory over Union troops at Murfreesboro Ridge. This particular pistol is currently on display at South Manchester High School’s museum located within Old Hickory Battlefield National Military Park adjacent to Alexander Peake House plantation where General David Johnston was headquartered when he attempted unsuccessfullyto gain possessionof Hendersonville early Sunday morning March 14th 1865

Smithfield is one of the leading pork-processing and meatpacking towns in the country. The town's namesake Samuel Smith founded a large hog processing plant there in 1881. The original town site was on several hundred acres near what is now downtown Smithfield. The first settler to arrive in what would become Smithfield was Jno. Wofford, who arrived with his family in 1794 from Georgia. In 1811, John Gaulds bought of land and built a log cabin on it which he named "Goudsville". At that time there were no buildings or inhabitants within a few miles of where Johnston's cabin stood. In 1881, Samuel Smith started his own hog production plant adjacent to his old farmstead on what became known as "Old Plantation Road". He produced hogs for local merchants and others until 1911 when he sold his interest to Ewing Hogg. From 1911 through 1922, Ewing Hogg ran an agricultural research station located adjacent to Old Plantation Road called UNC Asheville (now Piedmont Community College). This facility provided important financial support for many early Davidson County Agricultural Schools including Appalachian State University and NC Agriculture Research & Development Center located today on Main Street between US 412 and 407 just east of downtown Asheville Samuel Ayer purchased Ewing Hogg's share of the Hog Factory tract in 1922 and continued operation until its closure in 1971 by then Allied Biscuit Corporation President Everett Beal because this location offered more efficient harvesting methods than older plants being operated by Beal's predecessor Cargill Incorporated In 1951 Southeastern Tobacco Company merged with Union Carbide Company forming Nabisco Incorporated which had its head office located at 5500 Patterson Drive South Footeville NC 27558 later renamed Brown Field Plaza Shopping Center after company president Floyd Brown who died suddenly while attending a business meeting at that location In 1984 Nabisco closed down their Raleigh headquarters after years of struggling against aggressive marketing strategies by Procter & Gamble
