Smithfield is a town in Rutherford County, North Carolina, United States. The population was 9,785 at the 2010 census. It is the largest community in Rutherford County by population. The name "Smithfield" comes from English settlers who named it after General Smith who fought against Native Americans in 1776. The first village on the site of present-day Smithfield was established about 1760 by whitesmiths and farmers from Scotland and England. In 1800, John Sevier founded an ironworks in what is now Smithfield. By 1810, more than 1,000 people lived there and a post office was established that year. In 1828, a sawmill was built on the east side of town; it continued to be operated until 1888 when it was sold to John A. Hagood for use as a flour mill. The mill became known as the Hagood Mill because its owner had two sons named James A., Jno A.'s son George Washington Hagood and George W.: all three men were governors of North Carolina during Reconstruction (1868–1874). After being closed for several years, the mill reopened in 1881 as the Union Mills Company with grinding capacity of 10 tons per day and 6 million bushels of flour per year produced before it went bankrupt in 1893. That same year saw production increase to 24 tons per day at Union Mills when new buildings were erected on Shockoe Bottom Road adjoining the old millrace leading into town from Hawkins Creek swamp near Wilmington; this increased production until 1903 when mills ceased operations due to competition from sheet metal plants south of Raleigh led by Atchison Hall & Co.. That same year saw First National Bank moved into downtown Smithfield from its original location on High Street across Frome Road (now Tryon Avenue) following incorporation as a bank within Rutherford County under state law passed that year following passage of Amendment No 3 which granted voting rights to African Americans throughout Confederate states including South Carolina but not sectionalism which disqualified them from voter representation in those states according to Confiscation Acts passed subsequent that year enjoining such discrimination among other things under state government power including education).
