Smithfield is a town in inner-city Raleigh, North Carolina, United States. The population was 18,752 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Raleigh–Durham Metropolitan Statistical Area. Smithfield is also known as "The Pigtown." The first Europeans to sight what would become Smithfield were English traders who landed on Roanoke Island in 1584 during the English colonization of North America. In 1692, a man by the name of John Smith discovered and claimed land around what would become Smithfield. The town was founded on October 11, 1767 by James Johnston and others from New Bern County as a result of an act passed by the General Assembly in that year. Johnston's grandson George Washington purchased 1,500 acres (580 ha) of land from Johnston in 1786 for $5 per acre (2 ha). This land became known as "Mount Vernon". The first crop grown here was corn which was planted between 1800 and 1801. subsequent crops included cotton, wheat and rye. By 1830, when it had reached its peak production of 2 million bushels (9300 metric tons), cotton had replaced corn as the dominant crop in this area; however, rice continued to be a major cash crop until after World War II when it overtook cotton as the leading export product. In 1865-1866 an Act of Congress authorized construction of two railroad lines through Durham – one connecting Raleigh with Wilmington via Durham and Chapel Hill; and another connecting Durham with Charlotte viaayette Road/Upper Arlington Avenue/Mallory Street/Southside Boulevard/Winston Road/Fayetteville Road/Downtown Matthews Avenue."In 1868 James Johnston died leaving his estate to his son John Johnston Sr., who decided to subdivide into farms rather than build a single large farm."This decision allowed small farmers throughout Wake County to sell their products directly to consumers instead of having them transported long distances across Durham or Chapel Hill for shipment back home."Johnston Jr.'s heirs sold over 100 miles (160 km) worth of farmland southward from Mount Vernon making it possible for people within Wake County to have their own storehouse for goods that didn't fit on larger farms."By 1907 about 60%of all produce delivered into Raleigh came from these smaller farms" . Over time other crops such as soybeans and peanuts replaced cotton as the primary crop although some areas still grow corn for livestock feed

Smithfield is a town in Alamance County, North Carolina, United States. The population was 1,854 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Charlotte–Mecklenburg Metropolitan Statistical Area. The Smithfield settlement dates back to 1810, when brothers James and John Smith started a small farmstead on the current site of Smithfield. By 1827, the two brothers had bought and divided their original farm into two tracts: one for themselves and one to sell to other farmers. In 1831, James' son-in-law Drury bought land from John Smith for $1,000 cash. In 1850, Drury sold his share of the farm to Wm. Henson for $5 per acre. At that time there were no roads or water supplies in Alamance County so freight traveled by oxcart or horseback over long distances between towns and factories in Raleigh and Concord. In 1861 during the American Civil War, Confederate forces burned most of Durham before retreating southward through Alamance County towards Greensboro). On July 4th 1865 Union troops entered town after defeating Confederate General Robert Ewell's army at Battles around Uniontown (near present day White Flint). Many local residents fled as Union troops burned their homes; however many remained behind to rebuild following the war
