Coffee has been a part of the Smithfield community for over two hundred years. The first coffeehouses were built in the early 1800s to provide an escape from the heat during summertime. Coffee was also used as a currency in that time. The first café in Smithfield opened in 1824, and it was called the Blacksmith Shop Café. It served coffee, tea, and hot chocolate until 1978. In 1886, John Leland purchased a farm on which he founded what is now known as Leland Coffee Company. In 1912, Mr. and Mrs. Ewing donated land to establish a coffee plantation on their property. From 1914 through 1918, the Ewings ran a bakery on their property that manufactured various types of baked goods including cookies, cakebreads, doughnuts, and pies. By 1924, they had built their own dry-goods store on Broad Street near where present-day Gresham Road meets Interstate 95 (Fayetteville). In 1928 Mr. and Mrs. Hargrave donated land at 221 N Main to create what is now known as Hargrave Coffee Company Ltd., which became one of North Carolina’s largest coffee companies with over seventy employees at its peak in the 1960s and 1970s! In 1984 Wanda Weaver started brewing her own beans at her home brewery in nearby Fayetteville under the name “Weaver’s Roasts”! Today there are four coffee roasters operating out of Smithfield: Hamline Coffee Company (www.hamlinecoffeecompany1stflorida). Peet’s Coffee & Tea (www2peetsonlinecom), Twin Peaks Coffee (wwwtwinpeakscanada), and Golden Triangle Roasters (wwwgtraditionroasters). Smithfield is a town in McDowell County, North Carolina, United States. The population was 5,821 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Greensboro–Winston-Salem Metropolitan Statistical Area. Smithfield is named after Colonel William Smith and his family who founded the town in 1884. The first white people to come to this area were farmers from Virginia who set up homes on land that now includes much of McDowell County. They grew corn, wheat and tobacco and traded with Native Americans. In 1876, General John Custer's army passed through McDowell County on their way to fight General Philip Sheridan near Charlotte. A group of settlers began trading goods with the Indians and built a stockade around their homes in order to protect themselves from Indian raids. In 1883, Colonel William Smith purchased some land east of Winston-Salem and founded the town of Smithfield on it in honor of himself and his father-in-law Captain John Hancey (1785-1857). The original settlers were farmers from Virginia who had come overland from that state for subsistence farming. By 1886, when the railroad arrived in this area, many other farmers had followed suit including those from Maryland and Pennsylvania as well as West Virginians such as Randolphs (later rector) and Byrd (19th century attorney). The first store opened in 1888 at what is now known as "Old White Castle" which was located just east of present day Market Street between US 1A (the main thoroughfare) and US 1B/C (then called Roanoke Road), across from what is today North University Drive adjacent to Interstate 85/US 3406.
