Smithfield is a small town in the eastern part of North Carolina. The population was 5,752 as of the 2010 census. It is located in Robeson County, and is bordered by Johnston County to the north, Scotland County to the east, Bladen County to the south, and Buncombe County to the west. The city grew rapidly during World War II due to its importance as a munitions plant. The first section of the shop was open at 720 Seventh Ave., N.Y., and soon became known as "The Shop." From 1971-1989, the Shop operated out of Battery Park City in New York City. It closed its doors on December 1, 1989 after more than 25 years in business. In 1992, President George H.W. Bush presented Rear Admiral John L. Stroud with a Corvette Stingray as an gift for his service in protecting America's coasts and waters from terrorists and other threats during Operation Desert Storm/Operation Restore Hope (UNIFOR). On May 5th, 2005, Rear Admiral Stroud received a new Corvette Stingray from then-Secretary of Defense Donald Rumsfeld as an addition to his Coast Guard Medal collection at Dow Chemical Company's Corporate Headquarters located on Long Island City Blvd., Queens, NY 10022 USA On July 6th 2003 Commander Roscoe Latham presented Vice Admiral Jeffrey A Skipper with a custom designed bronze plaque honoring him for being an exemplary leader who has exemplified devotion to duty both ashore and afloat during his nearly two decades commanding UPNLF (United States Pacific Fleet) Squadron 15 ships while also serving as Commanding Officer USS Ponce (LHA-7). This is only one example of many great gifts given by members of the USCG Auxiliary since 1978 when our humble donation system began!

Smithfield was a slave-holding town in North Carolina, located on the banks of the Elizabeth River. The town developed around a plantation that operated from 1792 to 1821. Smithfield is significant for its role in the history of slavery and black Americans. The town was founded by James Smith and his family during the early 1800s as part of what would become an important slave-holding center in South Carolina. In 1792, Smith bought land east of Raleigh and built a plantation named Elizabeth on it. From this plantation, James and his descendants operated many slaves until the end of American slavery in 1865. For much of its history, Smithfield was one of the most important African American communities in North Carolina. This was due to both its location within commuting distance to major cities such as Raleigh and Charlotte, and its large population of enslaved Africans who were used for farming, transportation, and other economic activities. Additionally, Smithfield played an important role in black America's political development during this time period. In 1821, when freedmen began to arrive in large numbers from Georgia and Alabama, Smithfield became one of the largest free black communities in North Carolina. Although small at first compared with other towns located along the Elizabeth River region, Smithfield grew rapidly over time due to its strategic location within commuting distance to major metropolitan areas. This growth helped contribute to increased trade between local businesses and regions surrounding Raleigh or Charlotte; as a result, Smithfield developed into one of the most prosperous slave-holding towns in nineteenth century America.
Smithfield was founded in 1828 by Joseph Smith, an early Mormon leader. The first buildings were a log cabin and a store. In 1836, the town was moved to its present location on the side of a mountain near what is now Elizabeth City. The town grew rapidly and by 1840 had a population of over 1,500 people. It became the capital of North Carolina in 1845 and remained so for many years. In 1870, it merged with Raleigh to form the state of North Carolina.
