The Smithfield Air Force Base is home to the United States Airforce. The base has served as a major center for airpower since World War II. It played an important role in the Cold War, where it was one of the few military installations in North Carolina that could support NATO operations. The base also hosted numerous airshows and displays during the 1980s and 1990s. Today, the Air Force operates more than 100 aircraft at Smithfield AFB, including Boeing 747Cs and McDonnell Douglas MD-80s. The majority of these aircraft are used for aerial refueling and bomber patrols over Northeast America. Additionally, many jets are stored at various locations on the base to be used when needed. One of the most popular activities at Smithfield AFB is flyball; this game is played on an artificial turf field that measures approximately 350 feet by 150 feet. This fun activity allows people of all ages to get their hands dirty while spending some time together outdoors. Another popular activity at Smithfield AFB is dogwalking; visitors can bring their dogs ontobase for a day of playtime with handlers from various branches of the military and law enforcement agencies who provide instruction on how to properly walk a canine friend safely around town or country!

The USAF is responsible for providing air power to support NATO, World War II, operations in Afghanistan and numerous other global missions. Airpower has always been a key part of US military strategy. In 1941, President Franklin D. Roosevelt ordered the USAAF to become “the air arm of the Army”. Today, the USAF remains one of America’s primary providers of air power and its personnel are some of the best-trained in the world. The USAF has a wide range of aircraft that it can use to carry out its missions: from fighter jets to bombers and even remotely piloted vehicles (RPV). The Smithfield Air Force Base gift history begins on October 1, 1954 when General James H. Mattis was named the base's first Superintendent. In 1958, the air force Museum was dedicated and Lt. Colonel John S. Welsh became its first curator. The gift of an airplane to the air force in 1961 was a major event in the AFB gift history as it represented a new era for USAF activity at Smithfield. More significant gifts followed including land, buildings, equipment and training aircraft over the years.
Smithfield is a town in Buncombe County, North Carolina, United States. The population was 5,834 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Buncombe County. Smithfield is located on the Research and Development Parkway, which runs along the length of I-85. The first people to settle in what is now Smithfield were Methodists who arrived from South Carolina in 1776. They built a church and began trading with other local communities. The area around present day Smithfield was originally part of Cherokee Nation until 1828 when they ceded it to the United States as part of the Treaty of New Echota. In 1838, John Cropston opened a store here and developed this community into one of the largest textile mills in America. He named his mill "Smith's Mills" after his previous employer, James Smith, Sr., owner of nearby Rocky Mount Mill. In 1901, Drury Brothers Tobacco Company bought out Cropston's share in Smith's Mills and renamed it "Dryden Paper Mart". Dryden became one of America's leading paper companies through its sales operations throughout Southeast Asia and Latin America as well as its production operations here at Smith's Mills. In 1969, when American Tobacco Corporation merged with RCA Victor Inc., Dryden Paper Mart becameRCA Victor Tobacco Co., an affiliate company that operated independently until 1984 when it was dissolved by merger into Lorillard Incorporated (Lorillard then acquired by British American Tobacco). Today there are several legacy businesses active within our walls: Kennecott Copper Mines LLC manufactures copper products; Appalachian Nursery & Garden Center providessidewalk gardening services; Fidelity Investments has its corporate headquarters here; and we have many visitors who come each week for their favorite foods from our produce stand or their favorite cigarettes from our cigar shop!
The USAF has a rich airforce gift history. The first planes were delivered to theAAF in November 1941. The military aviation club de France (MAC) was founded on 21 October 1940 by General Charles De Gaulle as a French arm of the RAF. It soon became clear that French pilots would not be able to serve in the AmericanAAF, so De Gaulle decided to create his own organization. He named it "the Air Force Association Française" (AFA), and began negotiations for the purchase of American aircraft. On 15 December 1941, AFA purchased two Boeing B-17 Flying Fortress bombers from America's Eastern Airlines at an auction in Paris. This was the beginning of what would be known as the Second World War, and France was part of Axis Europe. During World War II, both the USAAF and RAF flew over 1 million missions across all theaters of war including Bomber Command which regularly carried out operations over Germany during this time; Fighter Command also had activity throughout most of 1944/45; however, RAF flying did reach its peak during late summer/fall 1944 with participation in Operation Crossbow which saw 1,500+ sorties flown against German targets in southern Belgium and Netherlands). The AAF flew 439 combat missions overall out of 511 squadrons engaged in World War II; it is interesting to note that only 31% – or only 146 total – were fighter Squadron based while almost half (257) were bomber squadron based units!
