During World War II, the town made major contributions to the war effort by manufacturing ammunition and building airfields. After the war ended, many businesses closed but some continued operation such as Journeys Restaurant which still remains open today. In 1948, Sanford became one of three townships (the others being Rocky Mount and Kinston) within newly formed Davidson County when that area was split from Durham County.
Sanford was founded in 1795 by George Sanford, a British American. The town grew rapidly and by 1827 it had over 1,000 residents. In 1865, the Confederate States of America surrendered at Appomattox Court House and Sanford became part of the Union state of North Carolina.
