Military gift history in Sanford, North Carolina goes back to the Revolutionary War. The town of Sanford was named for General John Barnwell, who fought in that war. As the town began to grow and develop, so too did its military capabilities. In 1778, General Nathanael Greene arrived in town and ordered the construction of a fortification known as Fort Stanly. The fortifications were completed in 1780 and served as a garrison for many years. In 1812, General Robert E. Lee came to Sanford on his way to join forces with General Joseph Johnston against Yankees at Hillsborough Heights. When he reached town, he ordered the construction of a new house called “Lee”s House” which would become one of the most photographed locations in America during the Civil War. After the Battle of Antietam (1862), General McClellan transferred his army from Alexandria Virginia to encampment at Fort Donelson near present-day Sanford. While there, McClellan learned about an abandoned cannon battery located within easy distance of his encampment and decided to adopt it as his own artillery piece on October 12th 1863. That same day Confederate Lt Col Thomas Loyd discovered this abandoned battery while patrolling nearby hillsides and took possession thereof without orders from either side; thus beginning what is know today as Battery Loyd history in Sanford! Since then, much has changed about Battery Loyd; however its placement within Stonington Park remains unchanged! Today’s Battery Loyd is still home to numerous antique cannons and is open daily for visitors from 9am-5pm EST during regular business hours (weekdays except Memorial Day). It is also possible to explore adjacent interpretive exhibits related to local history surrounding Bty Loyd including battlefields such as Antietam National Battlefield & Cemetery where over 55% of all casualties incurred during World War II occurred & Camp Polk which housed both Union troops and Confederate prisoners prior & after hostilities ceased
