The Marine Corps deployed gift history to Sanford, North Carolina on December 12, 1941. The Marines of Company K, 1st Battalion, 5th Marines were ordered to disembark at the pier and load supplies into a cargo boat. A large crowd had gathered on the dock to watch as the boats pulled away from the pier. A few minutes after takeoff, the boat captain reported that they were being followed by a Japanese destroyer. Moments later, torpedoes exploded near the boat, causing it to capsize and hit a reef. All aboard were killed or injured. The Navy quickly organized an amphibious landing force and sent Task Force 114 under Rear Admiral Harry Wohl in search of survivors. After days of searching with no luck, Wohl announced his intention to withdraw his forces back to Japan. He alerted his superior officers that he was running out of resources and would be withdrawing all units within 24 hours if he did not find any survivors. On December 15th Naval Lieutenant Commander John Bemis led a small group of 11 civilians including nine children who had been taken aboard ship before its sinking foundered off Japan's coast. They swam ashore along with four sailors from HMAS Canberra who also volunteered for their mission and became known as "the Doolittle Raid". Bemis' group eventually made it back safe land but lost one man overboard in what is still considered one of World War II's greatest naval disasters. In 1954 Bemis was posthumously awarded the Medal of Honor for his actions during this disaster when USS Halsey (CV-18) discovered him afloat with his men weeks after she sank her own ship while attacking Tokyo Bay

The area around what is now Sanford was first settled by Catawba people in 1795. They were long associated with the Cherokee nation and their territory extended from present-day eastern North Carolina to southeastern Georgia. In 1814, the Catawba people sold their land east of the Neuse River to American traders for $2 million. A group of Englishmen known as the Stratholme Company bought this tract from Catawba chiefs near present-day Powellborough and named it Sanford after Sir John Stratholme, 3rd Baronet (1696–1760), an English gentleman who had financed many of America's early western expeditions. The town began its growth when white pioneers arrived in 1825 and built log cabins along what are now Fayetteville Creek and Courthouse Square between 1830 and 1840. The citizens of Sanford voted on March 4, 1826 to adopt a constitution that would provide for elections by male citizens instead of just landowners; this became effective on November 5, 1827 In 1868 Confederate General Jubal Early invaded North Carolina but was repulsed at Durham Station nearpresent-day Durham City; Early's forces then reached Wilmington before withdrawing into Georgia. In 1828, Sanford became the seat of government for what is now Wake County. The town's growth continued until after the American Civil War when it began to decline rapidly because of its distance from major population centers and its lack of access to transportation. By 1870, only a few hundred people lived in Sanford; it had ceased to be an important town by 1900
Sanford was founded in 1795 by Major General Robert E. Lee and his wife Elizabeth Randolph. The original home of the Lee family, which still stands on Union Street, was built on a hill overlooking the town. In 1835, Sanford became a city after it was annexed by Raleigh. In 1889, Sanford was designated as the capital of North Carolina because Raleigh had become too populous and there were not enough incentives for small towns to keep up with the larger city.
