After suffering from financial difficulties during Reconstruction, Sanford gave up its municipal charter to become an Omni-National Bank in 1924. The bank went into receivership in 1931 and was liquidated in 1933. However, it is still remembered for being one of America's first national banks. In 1936, Sanford hosted the first annual Raleigh-Durham International Jazz Festival which helped popularize jazz in North Carolina.
