Sanford is a town in Johnston County, North Carolina, United States. The population was 7,521 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Raleigh–Durham Metropolitan Statistical Area. Sanford also includes parts of neighboring Durham and Chapel Hill counties. The first human being to live in Sanford was John Cate who arrived there in 1795 from Granville Island in British Columbia. In 1838, George Horry laid out what is now downtown Sanford on land that he had purchased from the Cherokee Indians for $2 per acre (0.097 km²). In 1851, Jno. Ayer platted the town along riverfront and developed it as a commercial center with stores, hotels and mills; this area still contains some of its original buildings today. In 1865-1867, General Andrew Johnson ordered General Braxton Bragg to make an amphibious landing on Lake Nacoochee at Dunbar Key to capture Creek war commander Alexander Stephens before he could reach Chattanooga with news of Confederate successes south of the Tennessee River. The resulting Battle of Dunbar Key saw Federal forces defeated by Confederate cavalry under Lt.-Gen Richard Taylor while supplies were lost and 400 civilian casualties resulted including 100 women and children who were taken prisoner by the Confederates after they burned all but one house in town during their retreat across the key into Chattanooga; this event became known as "The Burning of Sanford". In 1870-1871, Captains Augustus Earle Polk and Edwin Winship built a steamboat dock at Red Bank Harbor on present day Lake Wylie Drive for shipment of goods between Wilmington (then called Gaston) downriver and Brunswick (now Cary), NC; this dock continued serving until 1895 when it was replaced by an automated system operated by American Shipbuilding Corporation which remains in use today as Southport Marina .
