The Coast Guard has been providing a service to the Sanford community since 1916. In 1916, the Coast Guard was created as a result of the United States entry into World War I. At that time, there weren't any regular U.S. Coast Guardsmen stationed in North Carolina. The first captain of the coast guard unit was appointed on November 15th, 1916 and he ordered all boats on Lake Saluda to be manned with officers and men from local companies of artillerymen and infantrymen who would help patrol the lake during wartime. In order to provide some form of military support for local communities during wartime, Captain John Witherspoon put together a gift shop at his home on King Street in Sanford which sold uniformed clothing, dog food, gasoline oil products and other supplies used by coastal defense forces throughout America. It wasn't until 1917 that Headquarters Battery Fourth Artillery (HBA-4) was established at what is now Fort Bragg in Raleigh but Captain Witherspoon's store continued to sell emergency supplies until 1919 when it closed its doors due to lack of business. A new store opened up on Kings Highway in 1922 located near where present day US 421 meets US 301 outside of town limits which became known as "The Store" because it continually sold goods from coast guard shipyards along NC 291 just east of town limits across Lake Saluda including ammunition, engineering equipment, lifejackets and more. Sanford is a town in Randolph County, North Carolina, United States. The population was 9,711 at the 2010 census. Sanford is part of the Greensboro–Winston-Salem Combined Statistical Area. The first Europeans to visit Sanford were French colonists in 1763 and 1764. In 1802, slave traders founded a plantation near present-day Sanford and began shipping slaves to the north. By 1835, Sanford had 11 black families living on its land. The town was named for General John Custer during the Dakota War of 1862 when he was killed after leading an attack against Native Americans in what is now Minnesota. In 1865, Confederate General Robert Ewell invaded north Carolina and took Fort Fisher from Union forces; Sanford residents helped loot and burn the fort before fleeing into Mexico with their supplies. A few years later, annexation by North Carolina caused much change in the town's demographics as most white residents left for other states while African Americans continued to live here illegally or were purchased by white landowners. The local library (now known as sanfordlibrary) opened in 1955 as one of only a handful of public libraries west of Interstate 95 at that time. African American voters organized themselves into groups called "Negro Republicans" to try to gain influence within their community through party politics but little came of it until after World War II when some progress was made thanks to civil rights legislation passed by Congress and signed into law by President Franklin D. Roosevelt on December 12, 1941 (). In 1949, state legislators decided that downtown Sanford should be placed within limits designed specifically for Negroes so they could more easily access education and business opportunities without feeling threatened or ghettoized within their own small town demographic profile; this led to increased development around downtown including shopping malls (the mall built today), restaurants/cafés/bars/nightclubs etc., which has since relegated most African American businesses along those streets closed down or relocated elsewhere since then due primarily to gentrification trends towards wealthier suburbanites paying less attention than they used to do towards historically black neighborhoods throughout most major urban areas across America − another example why race still matters! On November 3rd 2016 Hurricane Matthew smashed into eastern North Carolina causing widespread damage including parts of Sanford where homes were destroyed or burned down leaving many people displaced who are currently living in temporary housing provided by volunteers from various organizations like Habitat for Humanity NC which also helps provide food security for these victims as well as clean up efforts following hurricanes such as Florence earlier this year
