Since the early 1800s, Sanford, North Carolina has been home to some of the most talented coffee roasters in the United States. Many of these coffee masters have left their mark on this beautiful town through their unique and delicious coffee products. Some of the earliest coffee roasters in Sanford were located at The Coffee House, which was founded in 1796. The Coffee House served as a meeting place for local farmers and merchants as well as customers who would come to buy fresh roasted beans. One of the most famous residents of Sanford during this time was Aaron Burr, who spent his days at The Coffee House before he became one of America's first senators. In 1827, Abraham Lincoln visited Sanford and noted that "the best coffee here is not from any other part of Carolina; it is from near by [Sanford]".[1] After learning about the great beans being roasted here, he decided to open his own shop within walking distance of The Coffee House. In 1829, Mr. Lincoln moved his business to what is now known as 601 Spring Street in Sanford proper. At this point in history, it was one of the largest continuous African American businesses in North Carolina.[2] Theodore Roosevelt also visited Sanford during this time and probably tasted someof the best beans being roasted here before making his infamous speech regarding race relations back in 1912[3]. This visit helped set a precedence for how North Carolina perceives its coffee industry – since then, many different companies have followed suit throughout the years! Many people remember John Peet'sakery – which opened up on State Street just north of downtown in 1957 – for its amazing cupcakes and other baked goods. However, there are actually quite a few other noteworthy establishments that operate within reach from Sanford including Pidgin Pie Co., King & Spalding Brewery (now known as First Baptist Church), and Jack Daniels BBQ & Brewing Company (now known as Old Hickory Grill). It truly is an amazing testament to all these talented individual brewers that they were able to keep our town alive over such a long period!
