On December 5, 1861, the Confederate States of America seceded from the United States of America. On December 12, 1861, the Confederate Navy sent a squadron of ships to blockade the port of Charleston, South Carolina. The blockade was unsuccessful and on January 10 1862, a French merchant ship Western Pacific arrived in Charleston with a cargo of munitions for the Confederacy. The Western Pacific's captain was an American named John D. Sitton and he offered to sell the munitions to the Confederate Navy for $5 per ton. The Confederate Navy accepted this offer and received 1,500 tons of munitions from Sitton. This is known as the first naval gift transaction between two nations in history.

Salisbury is a town in Orange County, North Carolina, United States. The population was 8,521 at the 2010 census. It is the largest community in Orange County and it forms part of the Salisbury-New Bern-Morganton Combined Statistical Area. The first people to live in what is now Salisbury were Native American Chiefdoms who hunted deer and fished in the area for shellfish and other seafood. The first white man to set foot on this land was Captain John Smith from Virginia in 1619 when he explored and charted what is now Orange County. He named the area "Salisbury" after his home town of Southampton, England. The town was platted in 1836 by Colonel James Fenton as part of a larger plan to improve transportation between Charlotte and Raleigh. The towns of New Bern, Concord, Newton and Salisbury all grew up around Fenton's Landing on Wilson River near present day Graham Street. In 1851, Fenton donated land for an Episcopal church which served as the nucleus for what would become known as Salisbury. In 1875, General George Custer died while fighting with the Indian Wars off into Canada during what is today known as World War I; his horse happened to be grazing on some property that would later become Salisbury Township along Wilson River just south of present day Graham Street. This event led to increased development around Custer's locality including homes being built on high ground overlooking the river where Fort Loudoun now stands

Salisbury is a town in Orange County, North Carolina, United States. The population was 2,821 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Chapel Hill–Athol–New Bern, NC Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first white people to set foot in what would become Salisbury were prospectors and traders from Georgia in 1814. They named their new settlement after the ancient city of Salisbury in England, which they had seen on a trip to the area. By 1825, Salisbury had a small community of about fifty people and was known as "The Crossing." In 1830, the town's post office became known as "Salisbury Heights". In 1840, J.D. Powel acquired 640 acres (2 km²) east of present-day Salisbury and built a large plantation called Powel Manor on it. He also began development of nearby Candlertowne Plantation with cleared land that he purchased from Captain John Candler for $1 per acre (0·40 kg/ha). In 1843, Powel married Anna Clyburn who came from Iredell County, North Carolina Through her marriage to Powel, Anna became one of the few African Americans to own property in what would become Salisbury Township. Anna died in1868 and is buried atCandlertowne Plantation near Powel Manor where she spent much of her life living with her husband and five children until his death in 1912. After his death Anna's estate passed into probate control and was divided among his five children including James M., Jr., who took over managementofCandlertowne Plantation; Sarah E.; Dudley W.;and Donald C.. James M., Jr., founded what would become Appalachian State University (ASU) in Cullowhee County just north of Salisbury along Upson Creek before leaving it to his sonJames Mccarthy II who left itto ASU's current president Dr David Blythe McCormick In 2013 DrBlythe McCormick announced that ASU will move its campus from Salisbury Park into new facilities located adjacentto Appalachian State Universityin DurhamNC by 2021
