The Marine Corps Deployment Gift History Collection at the Salisbury Museum of Art preserves and celebrates the history and culture of Marines in Salisbury, North Carolina. The collection includes items from both before and after World War II as well as examples from today's Marine Corps. The Marine Corps Deployment Gift History Collection began in October 1998 when donations were made to the museum by members of the Marines of North Carolina Regiment 3503 who had served in Okinawa during World War II. Since then, more than 3,500 items have been donated to the collection. The objects in the Collection represent a wide range of gifts given by Marines to members of their community during peacetime and wartime. Included are artwork, tools, clothing, memorabilia and religious objects. Manyitems were donated by individuals or groups interested in recognizing or memory-marking Marines who have served our country faithfully.

Thirdly, marines maintain strong family ties within the unit through both ceremonial events (such as brawls) and everyday life tasks such as eating out at military dining facilities or taking care of personal needs common among all infantry units (e.g., haircuts).

Salisbury is a small town in central North Carolina, United States. The population was 1,827 at the 2010 census. It is part of Buncombe County. Salisbury was founded by English colonists in 1735 and named for Sir William Salisbury, who had been governor of North Carolina from 1696 to 1700. The first settler in what is now Salisbury was George Carteret, who arrived in 1735 with his family. He built a gristmill on theNC River and began to trade with other settlers in the area. By 1739, he had formed a partnership with James Robertson and others to purchase land from the Cherokee Indians near what is now Wilkesboro. They built a mill which became one of the most important businesses in town. A store also soon opened on Meeting Street (now Pritchard Avenue). In 1768, carteret donated land along Meeting Street for a public square which served as center of town until 1881 when it was moved to its current location on High Street. In 1840, John Brown met Thomas Fenton while working as an indentured servant aboard HMS Enterprise off Norfolk Island; they married two years later and decided to move to America together (Fenton had traveled through Carolina looking for land grants) settling in Granville County where they operated a farm before moving upriver to Salisbury where they erected a log cabin known today as "the Brown House". The couple had six children: three daughters died young; one son became an attorney and founded Newton County's first courthouse; only one son survived into adulthood and came home to help run the business until his death in 1908; their daughter Gertrude married Drury Harnett (founder of Greensboro) and lived there until her death there too . A Presbyterian Reverend named John Ketcham baptized their first child born here – Elizabeth – on October 12th, 1825 just after she turned 10 months old! The following year saw another milestone when their third daughter Anna was baptized at First Baptist Church . This continued apace with each new birth until all but two of their children were baptisms—one during Thanksgiving week 1830 (John’s birthday), one early December morning about four weeks shy of Christmas when little Clarissa becamechristened “Little Egypt” at Second Baptist Church just south of town limits ! Additions continued steadily through out this period at various churches including Third Baptist Chapel northeast of town limits (then known as Jesus Christ Episcopal Zion Parish), First Presbyterian Church northwest corner Market St., Methodist Episcopal Church across High St., finally Presbyterians established their own chapel within limits east side Main St., still attended by many today !! Only 2 children survived into adulthood without parentage…grandchildren continue visitations yearly
