Salisbury is a small town in Union County, North Carolina, United States. The population was 1,874 at the 2010 census. It was founded in 1786 and named for George Salisbury, 1st Baron Salisbury. The town was incorporated in 1847. The first post office in Salisbury was established on December 15, 1814. The town experienced growth during the early 1800s as a result of its location on Catawba River between Johnston and Henderson Counties. Cotton plantations were located along the river and many slaves were brought to work on these plantations from the southern states. In 1829, local farmers petitioned the state legislature to create a county to serve their area and this request was granted two years later. During Reconstruction following the Civil War, Salisbury became an important center for African American settlement as many freedmen came here to find new homes after being discharged from Union Army camps or prisons near Wilmington and Raleigh respectively. Many businesses were started here by African Americans such as Pemberton's Store which stood until 1951; Aiken & Company grocery store which continued operations until it closed in 1984;Likewise Wigglesworth Drugstore which lasted until 1978; Brother John Baptiste's restaurant which opened in 1906;and Sibley's Barber Shop and Grocery Store both open until they closed around 1970s In recent years, Salisbury has seen some redevelopment with new housing developments popping up along Catawba River Road as well as downtown becoming more pedestrian-friendly with several new restaurants opening up including Jaxson's Greek Grill (opened 2014), Mother Eve Pizza (opened 2016), BBQ Shack (2018),and Noble Street Brewery (2018).
