Salisbury, North Carolina is home to one of the earliest and most well-known coffee roasters in the United States. The city was founded in 1885 by John Lennon and his family as a small town on Catawba River. By 1912, Lennon had opened a small shop called "The Coffee House." In 1916, he began selling coffee beans at a local fairgrounds. By the early 1920s, Lennon's business had grown to include two stores and an associated roastery. Lennon's enterprise was not without its controversy. In 1922, he controversially refused to sell Equal Exchange coffee to Coca Cola because it did not meet their quality standards. He later apologized for his decision and changed his stance on Equal Exchange coffee. The boycott has been cited as being one of the first examples of corporate greed leading to environmental destruction. However, other historians have argued that Lennon's refusal may have been motivated more by economic than environmental concerns: Coca Cola threatened legal action if he did not comply with their demands for lower quality beans. In 1940, Lennon sold his company to JB Hinton & Sons Ltd., who continued distribution through several subsidiaries until 1991 when they merged with Brownell's Corporation to form what is now known as Nestle SA. At this point, Nestle began producing only pre-packaged ground coffee which it marketed under the names of its various brands including Roobie (Nestle), Maxwell House (Nestle), and Dutch Bros.' Grant calling for all Union soldiers present at Gettysburg to return home was ignored and General Robert E. Lee's army invaded Salisbury, burning buildings and robbing citizens. After Confederate forces burned down the Post Office in 1873, Captain Fenton donated land to create what is now the town square. Today, Salisbury continues its tradition of being a vibrant community with strong cultural values that are passed down through generations. It is home to many businesses and organizations such as United Methodist Church (UMC), Presbyterian church (PC), Chamber of Commerce (COCHC), School District #1 (SD1), and First Baptist Church (FCB).
