Roanoke Rapids is a town in Gaston County, North Carolina, United States. The population was 5,811 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Charlotte–Fort Mill Metropolitan Statistical Area. Roanoke Rapids is located on both sides of the Cumberland River and has a total area of 9 square miles (23 km²). The first European to visit what is now Roanoke Rapids was John White in 1719. He named it for his home in Scotland. The first permanent settler in what became Roanoke Rapids was James Cook who arrived during the autumn of 1784. Cook had been hired by Rear Admiral Sir Richard Howe to explore the new world and report back to Britain about its natural resources. Cook's landing marked the beginning of American exploration and development in this region which would lead to important advances such as railroads, ferries and manufacturing plants being established hereabouts over time. In 1812, General Andrew Jackson led an expedition northward through Gaston County on their way to attack Canada at the Battle of New Orleans; he stopped near Roanoke Rapids for supplies before continuing his journey upstream. Jackson's Raid destroyed much rural artwork throughout central America including that found hereabouts including some pieces from Roanoke Rapids which remain today housed at UNC Chapel Hill's Johnston Library Special Collections department along with other items from Jackson's raid such as cannons and Indian scalps/tattoos looted from Native Americans living around these parts

The town was originally known as Ramallah and later, Smyrna. In 1809, Roanoke Rapids became the capital of North Carolina. The city was named for James Robertson, the founder of Davidson College in Asheville, North Carolina. From 1809 to 1828, Roanoke Rapids served as the capital of what is now WesternNorth Carolina. On July 10, 1828, Roanoke Rapids was renamed Raleigh after Governor John Randolph.
