Roanoke Rapids is a town in Newton County, North Carolina, United States. The population was 1,049 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Greensboro–Winston-Salem–High Point Metropolitan Statistical Area. Roanoke Rapids is located on the banks of the Yadkin River, east of Winston-Salem and west of Highpoint. The first European to visit what is now Roanoke Rapids was Captain John Smith on his journey from Jamestown to Fayetteville in 1607. He named it "Newton" after Sir Nicholas Newton who had surveyed and traveled through much of present day North Carolina for English proprietors in 1624-25. Roanoke Rapids likely developed around this time as an agricultural community with resources available close by such as waterfowl hunting, fishing and farming opportunities. In 1881, a group ofynamically strong pioneers started homesteading hereabouts and quickly became known as "The First Farmers." They were early proponents of irrigation systems, planting corn (maize), beans (ground beef), soybeans and other crops on high ground overlooking the riverbank which later became known as their "Greensboro Heights". Many notable natives including author Harper Lee grew up or spent their childhoods in Roanoke Rapids including future president Jimmy Carter; former vice president Al Gore; folk singer Bob Dylan; poet Maya Angelou; actor/comedian Dick Cavett; musician Neil Youngblood and others. In 1957 local entrepreneur Ewing Gantt purchased 1,000 acres (500 ha) along the Yadkin River from Eastern Natural Gas Company for $10 per acre ($2 million today). One billion cubic feet (Bcf) natural gas were discovered here during Gantt's ownership tenure making him one of the largest private sector developers in North Carolina history. He immediately began extensive development with plans for a pulp mill, chemical plant and new homes included within his original land purchase However only limited construction proceeded due to factors beyond Gantt's control such as political disagreements within NCRDU over how best to handle coal mine pollution problems then worsening environmental conditions caused by major earthquakes throughout NC over that period Additionally steel fabrication plants opened up nearby making it difficult for Roanoke Rapids residents to keep pace with industry giants like Bethlehem Steel & Girder Works Incorporated while home prices continued to increase exacerbating these economic woes Unfortunately eventually all but one pulp mill closed down during the late 1970s concurrent with increased competition from much more profitable overseas mills while environmental concerns led some people heretofore seen primarily as entrepreneurs into becoming city dwellers overnight Some good examples include artist Willie Brown who moved from Charlotte to make his own art center & business incubator called Third World Gallery while also opening Third World Books inc.; restaurateur Danny DeVito moved from Durham to open East Side Cafe & Pizza Hut while also founding two successful charities: One based in support of education reform nationally called STARS Schools Foundation & Another focused on keeping children healthy& educated called Wellness Connection Inc.; photographer Terry Richardson moved from Asheville into an old textile factory he converted into an arts complex called Richardson Arts District which has become one of Southern Living's most popular tourist destinations enjoying significant growth since its inception A number of small businesses sprung up around town during this time including Hometown Home Hardware Store (now Pinnacle Hardware), Winnie Mae’s Café & Bakery (now Little Caesar’s Pizza), Sonny’s Hideaway BBQ Grill & Cantina which served food until 2009 when they converted into Bed bath& Beyond Stores effective 2011 closure followed by several other small businesses before finally cessation in 2016 Ashentowne Development Corporation LLC took over operations administratively until 2017 when all remaining businesses closing effective January 1st following incorporation Into Town Council form See full list below Ashentowne Development Corporation LLC officially took over operations administratively until 2017 when all remaining businesses closing effective January 1st following incorporation Into Town Council form See full list below

Rochester, New York, is the most populous city in upstate New York and one of the five boroughs of New York City. Rochelle was founded on April 10, 1785 by colonists from Ulster Province, who named their new town after Robert Rogers, an officer in the British Army. The name originated as a corruption of "ROACHER rapids" on the Clinch River because of its rapid current. In 1814, Rochester became a part of Albany County and was renamed after James K. Polk, United States Vice President under Franklin D. Roosevelt. In 1865-1868, during Reconstruction following the American Civil War (1861-1865), North Carolina's General Assembly passed a bill to create Roanoke Rapids as an independent municipality within Durham County. The bill depended upon gubernatorial approval due to its location near Durham's border with Orange County and its importance for transportation and trade between these two counties. Governor John Gee opposed secessionist sentiment among African Americans living in Durham County and vetoed the measure; however, he did not signs another secessionist bill until 1861 when he rescinded all laws authorizing slave trading within Durham County limits. On December 7th 1862 Raleigh residents voted to secede from North Carolina without first obtaining governor’s signature – this act is considered to be the first time that any U.S.-based city or town seceded from state government without being granted formal recognition by law or ordinance
Roanoke Rapids was founded in 1736 by Captain John Smith and the town grew up around the wharf where he built his ship, the Roanoke. The first white settler in Roanoke Rapids was James Caldwell, who arrived in 1738. In 1753, a group of Methodist missionaries came to Roanoke Rapids and started a small school. The mission was eventually taken over by the Baptist church in 1833. In 1830, Governor Tryon sent Major General James Kenedy to take command of the North Carolina militia and travel through the state looking for land to settle. He discovered that there were many rich tracts of land available in what is now West Virginia but because of its strategic location between Virginia and Kentucky, North Carolina had been coveted by these northern states for years. When Kenedy reported his findings back to Tryon, he recommended that North Carolina be added as one of the ten original United States! After much debate among members of Congress, it was decided that North Carolina would be added on December 14th, 1830. When Andrew Johnson became President in 1876, he issued an Executive Order ordering all military installations throughout America to be dissolved except for Fort Sumter which still stood at Charleston Harbor! This order caused great trouble for those living near military installations because they were required to leave their homes and go live in barracks or camps outside of town! However, most people along the East Coast managed to keep their homes and businesses unaffected – until September 11th when terrorists destroyed two buildings within New York City’s World Trade Center complex! This event led to a massive evacuation across the Atlantic Ocean with over two million people leaving their homes! After 9/11/2001 came Hurricane Katrina which made landfall on August 29th 2001 just after sunrise!! As this powerful storm approached Louisiana’s coast it significantly damaged coastal communities such as New Orleans making it difficult for residents to rebuild following Hurricane Mitch which killed more than 1/3 of all coastal residents!!! After Katrina damage had been assessed at $140 billion dollars FEMA ordered entire state government departments closed!!!!! Unfortunately this order also eliminated any opportunity for recovery so many have since died due to lack of access To healthcare services!!!!!!!!
