Since the Revolutionary War, the United States Navy has been deploying gift items to our coastal neighbors in order to show support. A number of these gifts have been associated with Roanoke Rapids, North Carolina. On December 12, 1775, a small Naval detachment was sent to Roanoke Rapids in order to secure British hostages. The garrison was very small and there were only six sailors and two marines available for duty at the time. This event is often cited as being one of the most important naval actions during the Revolution. The first USS Constitution arrived in Jamestown on December 15, 1775, and immediately began providing goods and services to Roanoke Rapids Naval Station. In addition to supplying goods and services, Constitution also carried passengers from Portsmouth on New England coastlines on behalf of Virginia's navy squadron. In 1814 Commodore John Rodgers sailed his USS Raleigh into Roanoke Rapids for a ceremonial reception of Secretary of State James Ketchum following his visit to Wilmington along the coast of North Carolina. In 1815 Commodore David Dixon sailed his USS Randolph into Roanoke Rapids after his meeting with General Richard Howe at Yorktown Peninsula in Virginia.

The USS Constitution (1875) was a United States Navy ship that served in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. The ship's namesake was the first U.S. battleship, built at the keel yard of navies located in Portsmouth, NH, in 1845. She served as flagship of Commodore John Rodgers' squadron during the Spanish-American War ( 1898), and played a major role in crushing an attempted invasion by Spain off Puerto Rico on April 12, 1898. After her active duty ended in 1902 she was placed out of commission into reserve at Hampton Roads until sold for scrap on November 10, 1922 to be broken up at Wilmington, DE.
Roanoke Rapids is a small town located in the United States state of North Carolina. The population was 7,819 at the 2010 census. Roanoke Rapids is part of the Kinston-based Triad city area. It lies on the banks of the James River and has a total area of just over square miles (including its riverfront). The town was platted in 1892 by John Fenton, who named it for his father-in-law, Robert Rogers. Roanoke Rapids originally functioned as a trading post on the James River. In 1907, J.P. Morgan donated land to Roanoke Rapids which became known asMorgan Park. After years of growth and development within its own boundaries – largely due to strong community involvement – Roanoke Rapids officially annexed into Charlotte on July 1st, 1984. The Roanoke Rapids area of North Carolina is a history rich region dating back to the early 1600s. The rapids near Roanoke are one of the most impressive natural features in the area, and make for an interesting contrast with the surrounding country. The area has been inhabited by different cultures for centuries and has a unique set of historical events that have shaped its culture and landscape. The first humans to live in what is now North Carolina were Native Americans, who arrived from Siberia about 12,000 years ago. They built their homes along the banks of the Yadkin River, which forms much of today's Roanoke Rapids area. After many years of settling there, these natives began trading with other groups throughout the Southeast and Middle Atlantic regions. In 1727, English settlers arrived in what is now North Carolina and started farming on land that had been awarded to them by King George II as part of the Treaty of Paris after America's independence from British rule was gained. Over time, English colonists developed a strong economy based on fur trading with Native Americans and selling goods such as tobacco and iron ore to them. This trade led to some development in Roanoke Rapids areas including a sawmill complex that was built around 1810-1811. Other notable buildings during this time include a Masonic Lodge (1798) and an Episcopal church (1805). By 1830, however, violence had begun erupting between native occupants of Cape Fear County and white settlers due to competition for land and resources. This situation eventually led to open warfare between colonists and natives until 1835 when peace was finally achieved following negotiations between warring groups. During this time period, construction began on two major infrastructure projects in Roanoke Rapids - one being the construction of a wharf at present day drawbridge over Yadkin River (known then as Rocky Point) which opened in 1838; also Creek Road became official state road number 20 in 1840 after it was extended from US 50 eastward towards Raleigh city limits! The settlement at present day Roanoke Rapids began appearing as small villages shortly after these new roads were constructed – some named Johnstown or Scotlandville – but it wasn’t until 1845 when Fort Fisher was established just north-west of town limits! This fort served as both military storage facilities for supplies coming into town during timesofwarand also acted as a key basecampforthe Virginia Creeper Expeditionwhichinvestigatedthencityoftroatomaceous Asteroidsin1849! In 1865-66a large coal mine called Taylor Coal Mines went into operation south-west of townlimits;thismine contributedsignificantlytothe growthofRoanokeRapsidetownduringthattime! Additionally,Iron Bridge Roadopenedin1924connectingRoanokeRapsidetownwithFayettevilleand other northeasternpartsofthe United States! The town of Roanoke Rapids was founded in 1792 by Scots-Irish settlers. The town grew rapidly and by 1820, it had a population of 400 people. In 1851, the United States Congress approved the creation of a post office in Roanoke Rapids. The post office was opened on July 1, 1851, and soon became known as a center for trade and commerce. In 1863, Roanoke Rapids became the capital of North Carolina.
