The National Guard of Roanoke Rapids, North Carolina was formed on July 15, 1923 in response to the need for a military presence in the community. The unit has served as a volunteer militia ever since and is currently composed of soldiers and civilians who are mobilized for local emergencies and events. The gift history of the National Guard can be traced back to its creation as a volunteer militia. In 1923, the Roanoke Rapids Volunteer Militia consisted of only soldiers and civilians. At that time, there were no national guard units stationed in Roanoke Rapids. In response to the concerns raised by citizens about possible conflict between the military and civilian populations, on July 15, 1923, President Franklin D. Roosevelt signed into law an act creating the United States Military Academy at West Point (later New York State Army War College). This act activated 1/2 million men from all over America into service within sixty days. The National Guard was created as part of this mobilization effort. Since its activation in 1923, the National Guard has played a significant role in Roanoke Rapids community services including disaster relief operations during hurricanes Katrina and Rita; support during protests against racism; hostage negotiations; Law Enforcement Response Unit demonstrations against civil disobedience; Memorial Day ceremonies; Christmas displays throughout town center; Fourth of July fireworks display; plus many more special occasions! Today, members of the National Guard enjoy Recruitment drives every year which bring new individuals into service through various branches such as drill sergeant training programs or Reserve Officer Training Corps (ROTC) courses offered at University of Tennessee-Knoxville (UTK). Additionally, there are numerous parades throughout town held each summer to celebrate our military heritage while also showcasing our amazing community spirit!

The Roanoke Rapids community was first settled by farmers who came from Virginia in search of farmland. The population of the Roanoke Rapids community peaked around 1800 with a total of 300 residents. Over time, however, farming became less important and more manufacturing started to take hold in the area. This change led to a decrease in population until 1925 when there were only 100 residents living in Roanoke Rapids. This decrease was due in part to two factors: one being an oil embargo which resulted in a lack of jobs for people outside of Richmond, Virginia; and secondly, World War II which led to a lack of transportation options for people living near Richmond. In addition, because Roanoke Rapids lacked access to education opportunities outside of local high school systems, many people chose not to move here and eventually ceased exist as a result. However, this did not mean that life couldn’t continue on within thecommunity- there were still some businesses that operated throughout the post-war period including grocery stores, restaurants, cafes/bars/nightlife venues etcetera. The United States National Guard was first mobilized on April 14, 1795 to support the First Continental Congress. The National Guard was originally created as a militia arm of the government and its purpose has been variously claimed as being for defense, promotion of patriotism, or ceremonial purposes. Militia units were disbanded in 1849 when the Second Treaty of Paris ended the American Revolutionary War. Roosevelt announced that all Regular Army soldiers must register with their unit by September 1st in order to be eligible for exemption from Registration Duty during World War II mobilization. The next year on December 3rd President George Washington declared war against Japan after Japanese forces attacked Pearl Harbor Naval Base in Hawaii During World War II there were over 132 million men and women who served in uniform within both Allied and Axis nations including 116 thousand members of the U.S. National Guard In 1945 following World War II many units were re-activated as part Sixty-Third Infantry Division (later 199th Infantry Brigade Combat Team) activated at Camp Pendleton California on November 8th 1945 . Roanoke Rapids is a town in the U.S. state of North Carolina, located on the Roanoke River. The population was 1,752 at the 2010 census. The name is derived from French word "Rouen", meaning "lynch-tree" or "forest". The first known permanent English settlers in what is now Roanoke Rapids were Quakers who followed John Locke to America in 1629. The town began as a small post office established by John Baptist Pritchard and others in 1824. It became an incorporated municipality in 1834 and was named for General James Smith Roanoke, who fought against the British during the Revolution. In 1865, when part of Virginia seceded from North Carolina, Roanoke Rapids became its own county seat; it remained that way until 1971. From 1938 to 1946, Roanoke Rapids was also the site of World's Fairgrounds (now known as US-441). The town has a rich history dating back to before European settlement there; Native Americans used it for hunting and gathering resources including deer, bear, turkey and other game animals. In 1783 King George III granted land along the river for settlement by his subjects under a Royal Proclamation issued at New Bern after he had toured America and seen much suffering due to famine caused by war with Great Britain over natural resources such as tobacco crops being grown near London docksyards glutted with American goods created during English Plantations' monopoly on world trade leading up to independence in 1776. On July 20th 1785 by order of Governor Tryon Lieutenant Colonel Thomas Moultrie founded Fort Caroline which served as an observation post on both banks of the river opposite present day downtown Roanoke Rapids while also providing medical care and supplies for local farms which extended downriver into what is now Lynchburg County - one year prior to Valley Forge where Lord Dunmore's forces retreated from retreating British troops after their failed attempt to take Yorktown Siege (1781). In 1800 United States Census – still using Pritchards Post Office name - 2 people lived here

The area became a trading post and settlement in the 17th century, when British colonists began to settle in what is now North Carolina. The region was first known as "Old Fort Orange" and later as "Rockingham". In 1814, the United States acquired North Carolina from Spain and renamed it after President James K. Polk. In 1848, the town of Roanoke Rapids was founded on the banks of the Yadkin River by Scots-Irish immigrants who had emigrated to America during the Potato Famine in Ireland. In 1865, Raleigh incorporated as a city and Roanoke Rapids became its commercial center. The town experienced rapid growth during Reconstruction following the American Civil War and eventually went through a period of decline beginning in the late 19th century. By 1930, however, Roanoke Rapids had regained some of its former prosperity and has since been an important cultural center for both North Carolina and neighboring Virginia.
