Reidsville was founded in 1847 by John and Elizabeth Reids. The town was named for General Nathan Bedford Forrest, who had come to the area in 1836 to scout for new land to settle. The family built a log cabin on the side of a hill overlooking the community, which they called "The White House". In 1850, the Reids moved into their current home and began to build up what would become one of North Carolina's largest towns. The town's growth continued until around 1870, when Factorytowns began expanding westward into what is now Henderson County. By that time, Reidsville had reached its peak as an agricultural center with several large plantations and hundreds of small businesses. However, by 1900, it was only an economic backwater again with few residents and very few buildings remaining from its days as a thriving city.
