Reidsville is a town in Cabarrus County, North Carolina, United States. The population was 7,781 at the 2010 census. It is the only incorporated community in Cabarrus County. The original settlers in what is now Reidsville were white men from South Carolina and Georgia who came to the area to work on the railroad. In 1868, General David Hunter named the community after Rear Admiral John Rodgers of the Confederate States Navy. Rodgers had served as Commander-in-Chief of all Union Navy forces during the American Civil War and was posthumously awarded the Medal of Honor for his actions at Hampton Roads on October 15, 1864. The first school was built in 1865 and initially operated as a day school. A second school was built in 1887 and became an junior high school before being renamed Reidsville High School in 1978. The current high school building opened in 1984 and is used by both sexes combined as a comprehensive high school. In 1967, Cabarrus County voters passed a resolution designating Reidsville as an historical site with special emphasis on its role within our county’s history with regards to African Americans; it remains one of only two such designated sites within NC (the other being Durham). The designation has helped support local cultural events which take place annually throughout December including Black History Month programs and holiday celebrations honoring various Afro-American figures through poetry readings, music concerts, art exhibits etc.; all while promoting traditional values among our citizens based upon their own culture rather than those dictated by outside forces
