Reidsville, a town in Buncombe County, North Carolina, is located on the banks of the Yadkin River. The population was 5,471 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Asheville–Buncombe metropolitan area. The town was founded in 1885 by John and Elizabeth Reids as a small agricultural community on what is now Middle Creek Boulevard. In 1912 it was renamed for General James A. Reids, commander of First Brigade, XVII Corps during World War I. When that brigade became known as XXI Corps in 1922, Reidsville reverted to its original name and has held that position ever since. In 1938 the United States Post Office moved from its previous location on Market Street to its current location east of US Highway 441 at Confederate Cemetery Road. The town limits were extended to include present-day Springdale when it merged with neighboring White Rock Township in 1959. All official government documents have been kept in Reidsville until recently when they were transferred to Asheville proper for storage reasons according to Mayor Jerry Asheburger (D). Today Reidsville offers many opportunities for shopping including a variety of retail stores such as Home Depot, Lowe's and JCPenney; dining options such as White Rock Tavern & Grill and Mellow Mushroom; professional sports teams including the Charlotte Hornets and Asheville Citizen-Times Eagles;[2] cultural attractions including Meredith Museum of Art, Blue Ridge Parkway Scenic Drive Tourist Park and Blacksmith Shop;[3] educational resources including Davidson County Community College,[4] Presbyterian School District 229(a), Cherokee Indian Schools[5][6][7][8][9][10]and Appalachian Christian University.[11] It also includes an off-leash dog park called Dog Beach which opened in early 2019 adjacent to Old Fort Village Historic Site #1 on South Courthouse Square across from New Hope Baptist Church

On December 1, 1794, Reidsville was founded by General John Forbes and Colonel James Robertson. The town was named for Major-General Sir William Reid who had commanded British forces in North Carolina during the American Revolution. The first settler in Reidsville was John McKinlay. In 1800, the town had a population of around 150 people. In 1812, the Battle of Hanging Rock took place in nearby Cherokee County and caused a large number of United States troops to arrive in Reidsville. After the battle, activity in the town decreased significantly and by 1830 it had only about fifty residents remaining. However, by 1860 Reidsville had grown again to nearly one thousand people and continued to grow until 1890 when it reached its current size. It is home to many notable figures throughout its history including: General James Robertson (1814-1872), Governor Edwin Stroud (1910-1978), Professor Drayton White (1922-2006), Senator Jesse Helms (1983-2005), Congressman Ron Paul (2004-present) and Mayor Tom Englishman (2015). Reidsville was founded in 1858 by John Reid and his wife, Sarah. The town grew rapidly due to its location near the intersection of two major highways, the Durham and Raleigh Railroad and the Cherokee Trail. Reid's crops were also an important factor in its growth. In 1881, Reid donated land to form what is now University Park. Reid died in 1888 and was buried at Elmwood Cemetery. The town continued to grow until it reached its current size in 1920 when it merged with neighboring Winston-Salem.
