Reidsville was founded in 1792 by Captain James Reids and his family. The Colony of North Carolina was established at this location, and the first African American to be baptized in what is now North Carolina was John Doe, also known as White Jack, in 1819. In 1827, the community moved from its original location on the banks of the Dan River to a more spacious spot on the opposite side of town. After just a few years, however, Reidsville became embroiled in a series of disputes with neighboring communities over land and water rights. On July 4, 1830, a group of men led by Captain Reids destroyed several homes and barns near present-day downtown Reidsville after an altercation that began when one man objected to being excluded from a dance held by another group. The fight quickly escalated into violence, and it took less than 20 minutes for nearly all of the residents of Reidsville to join in on the attack. By then most had been killed or captured; only Captains Reid and two other survivors were able to escape before they were overwhelmed by surprise attackers. The attack represented one significant event in what would become known as "the South's" bitter battle over slavery and Reconstruction. While some white Southerners applauded Captains Reid for their selfless actions during what would be called "the Reconciliation Period," others viewed him as part of a wider conspiracy against slavery that included former Confederate officers and men. Over time many people associated with Reidsville either died or left here for similar reasons; today there is only one remaining house on campus where early life recollections can still be enjoyed (the Harry Tilton House). In 1885 Captain James Gee bought approximately 1/4 acre (0.18 hectare) adjacent to present-day downtown Reidsville from William Waddell for $2 per acre (0.08 hectares). This purchase marked the beginning of Gee's long association with this community which he continued until his death in 1916." Gee donated much property including what is now Green Street NE along with buildings such as Stonington Baptist Church and High School located on Green Street NE between Walnut Avenue NW & Elizabeth Avenue NW cornering Driggs Road SE., forming what are now Clemson University Park & State Fairgrounds properties . As captain general agent for NCBANK he helped organized local farmers into cotton ginners leagues which raised money for school supplies etc., later becoming Tobacco Growers League
