The North Carolina National Guard has been a part of the state’s citizens for over 170 years. The guard is responsible for providing law and order in the state, as well as providing protection to residents. One of the most significant moments in the history of the national guard was when it was reactivated during World War II. At that time, North Carolina had many people who were willing to join up and help fight against Nazi Germany. Since then, the NC National Guard has played an important role in both peacekeeping efforts and military engagements. In 2017, it was announced that 1,000 members from across the US would be participating in NATO’s multinational mission “Operation High Sparrow” which is aimed at defeating Hezbollah in Lebanon. Today, there are more than 6,000 active duty soldiers and reservists within the NC National Guard. This number does not include any civilians who have volunteered their time or resources to support military operations such as Operation Olive Branch which took place earlier this year in Syria. In addition to its duties within state government and external contingencies, the NC National Guard also provides unique opportunities for service members to learn about leadership skills through Specialty Officer Programs (SOPs). These programs allow unit commanders to gain experience leading units into combat situations or working with other branches of government.

In 1885, the Pinehurst National Guard was organized and given its first units. In 1896, the guard was renamed the 116th Infantry Regiment and in 1907 it became a battalion. From 1912-1916, it fought in World War I as part of the 1st Brigade Combat Team (1st Cavalry Division). The regiment was redesignated as the 118th Infantry Regiment in 1916 and again from 1921-1927 as the 118th Infantry Battalion. In 1941, when World War II began, both battalions were reorganized into companies and designated 111th Infantry Regiment and 112th Infantry Battalion respectively. When World War II ended, both companies were redesignated once more as 117th Infantry Regiment in 1946 and 117th Infantry Battalion in 1949.
Pinehurst is a small town in the state of North Carolina. The population was 2,811 at the 2000 census. It is located on the Pinehurst Creek valley, east of Chapel Hill and west of Raleigh. The first Europeans to visit Pinehurst were Spanish explorers in 1585. The earliest settlement was made by Scots Presbyterians who named it San Jacinto after the Santiago de Compostela mission in southern Spain where they had been sent as missionaries around 1607-1609. In 1849, pine trees were brought from Japan and planted nearby in honor of Ulysses S Grant, who had become President that year. In 1903, General James Longstreet, commander of Union forces during the American Civil War and later president (1881-1893) ordered an experimental operation to plant pine trees on tract now known as "Grant's Prairie". By 1907 there were over 100 trees; however, only about 30 remain today due to disease or lack of proper care. When World War II began in September 1939, many local farmers became involved with the military because they knew that production would be needed for munitions plants and other war needs such as construction materials. For a time it looked like Pinehurst might fall into enemy hands but Allied troops invaded North Carolina anyway and liberated it on November 9th 1945 just days before Christmas Eve! Afterward Pinehurst experienced many years of economic stagnation untilURIKE COPPER COASTERS INC., a developer based out of Durham opened up shop here in early 1970s which immediately transformed things when its million dollar project called "Copper Coast" got underway creating what is now one of downtown's most popular districts - right next to UNC School Of Medicine! Today Pinehurst is an historic community full of culture, artistry and history with vibrant businesses and exciting new projects ongoing all along its streetscape including: arts & crafts stores Dupont Circle Market , Duke’s Distillery & Tasting Room Gallery District ~ 5 blocks north~ smithsonian center complex ~5 blocks south~ old bank building - 3 blocks southwest~ Village Green Restaurant

The National Guard has been used in various capacities throughout its history.
Pinehurst is a small town located in Yancey County, North Carolina. The population was 2,634 at the 2000 census. It is part of the Hickory-Lenoir-Macon Metropolitan Statistical Area. Pinehurst has a history dating back to 1795 when it was called "Newbern". In 1836, General Robert E. Lee's brigade of Confederate soldiers camped on the town's square and skirmished with Union troops before withdrawing to their encampment in nearby Lenoir County. A year later, Yankees burned down the town's courthouse and jail while looting local businesses. In 1861, during the American Civil War, Union forces under General John Pope attacked Pinehurst, burning down many buildings including a Masonic lodge and damaging several homes. On November 8th of that year Confederate Major General Joseph Johnston surprised Union forces near Pinehurst with an attack consisting of over fifty men horseback riders and artillerymen supported by two hundred infantrymen singing "J'aime les Bleus" (I love the Blues). After three days of battle Johnston arrived at Pinehurst with orders to burn it all down as retribution for this attack against his own army. After what proved to be an unsuccessful attempt by Johnston to take advantage of friendly fire from opposing units he withdrew his force early on November 11th after suffering heavy losses in what became known as Battle of Newbern Ridge. As a result of this battle, pinehurt began its growth as a small farming community with about seventy residents according to 1860 census data In 1865 local farmer Jens Nielsen founded Pinehurst Academy which became one of America's leading secondary schools for girls issueing degrees such as law and nursing . In 1888 Mayor Waddell donated land for a public library which opened its doors in 1893 . In 1925 Oakwood Presbyterian Church located adjacent to present day Pinehurst Post Office built an addition that remains today known as "The Old Chapel". Today pinehurt boasts two dozen businesses including thirteen banks , twelve churches/synagogues , four high school vocational schools (one each for metalsmiths and restaurant workers), six hospitals (including one operated by Baptist HealthSouthwestern), ten golf courses - three owned or managed by memberships organizations such as PGA Westchester Counties Golf Association (working out front at various country clubs) - five libraries - four parks - one zoo - eleven restaurants }, }
