Pinehurst is a small town in Durham County, North Carolina, United States. The population was 1,856 at the 2010 census. It lies on the banks of the Tybee River and is part of the Research Triangle Park metropolitan area. Pinehurst was founded in 1868 as a small community on a tract of land donated by Colonel Robert E. Lee to the town's founders. The name pinehurt originated from this location. In 1861, Confederate General Jubal Early arrived in Durham County with his army and set up camp near what is now Pinehurst. A few weeks later he left for Raleigh with some 8,000 troops to begin operations against Union forces under General Ulysses S. Grant. On July 9th, 1861, Early's army marched into Durham County unopposed and established Camp Greene near present-day Pinehurst along Tybee River. After spending several days reorganizing his force and learning about local geography, Early headed south towards Raleigh intending to join Confederate forces under General Pendergrast there pending an attack by Grant on that city soon thereafter.(1) In reality however Early withdrew his troops back northward before reinforcements could arrive and then marched them into reverse direction all the way back to Durham; thus creating one of history's first strategic withdrawals from battle.(2) Aftermath of Battle of Fort Donelson The following day saw general Butler march into town accompanied by Major-General Johnston with orders to burn all houses in which Confederates had taken refuge during the night of February 10th-11th.(3) This order caused great fear among many residents as it seemed likely that these same houses would become targets for destruction were they found notto have been emptied prior to its execution; considering also that most homes still possessed their furnishings and belongings within them making them valuable targets for looting.(4) Unfortunately for those living within these walls little change occurred during this time as no evidence suggests any such orders were ever issued or carried out other than perhaps imagined rumors circulated amongst officers concerned about possible consequences should such actions be revealed.(5) However given Butler's actual presence only a short distance away(6), it seems more likely that he merely passed through town on his way elsewhere rather than executing or burning any inhabited dwellings - something which unfortunately does not appear to have been true given subsequent events... Indeed nothing appears ever to have happened quite like this again throughout much of Civil War North Carolina - until finally… Reconstruction!
The first white settlers in Pinehurst were James Smith and his wife, Sarah. The couple moved from Carolina to Pinehurst in 1792. Smith was a surveyor for the Great Carteret Company, and he surveyed the area that would become Pinehurst. He named the property "Pinehurst" after one of his plantations in South Carolina. In 1814, Colonel John Cushing laid out a town square at the intersection of High Street and Old Usher Road in what is now downtown Pinehurst. Cushing's idea for the square was copied by other early developers in North Carolina. In 1822, two years after Captain David Caldwell founded Johnston Station on Yadkin River near present-day Cary, North Carolina, he purchased 640 acres of land east of present-day Pinehurst to build a plantation called Caldwell Plantation. According to tradition, Captain Caldwell offered naming rights to the newly founded town but it was declined because there wasn't enough space on the site for a courthouse and market house (the first such structures were built in North Carolina). The name "Pinehurst" became official when it was assigned as part of Johnston's property deeds by clerk William Harnett during an administrative hearing held on October 9, 1822. In 1861, Confederate General PteJohn Gorman attacked Union troops stationed at Fort Sumter within sight of nearby Peaksville while they slept; this event led to Union General Robert Ewell ordering all residents of northwestern Johnston County inside their homes until further notice on April 12 that year. As a result of this orderlies raiding local businesses throughout Johnston County during this time periodperture—one which occurred near present-day downtown Pinehurst—the inhabitants began calling themselves "Gormanites." After some initial resistance from some residents who felt they had nothing to gain from surrendering their homes (and who also didn't understand why anyone would want to leave their families behind), most Gormanites surrendered within days or weeks following Ewell's ultimatum. In 1865–1866 Confederate troops burned many homes along High Street between US 54 and I-95 West before withdrawing from Johnston County altogether During World War II much activity took place around downtown Pinehurt though not directly related to military purposes due largely to lack thereof during that time period
