Pinehurst is a small town in Durham County, North Carolina, United States. The population was 584 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Durham–Fayetteville–Chapel Hill, NC Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first white person to set foot in what would become Pinehurst was Captain John Smith in 1774. He and his party were exploring the area when they came across a large tract of land that he thought would be perfect for farming. The area became known as "Smith's Neck". In 1814, Colonel James Long established a military post here and named it Fort Hill after himself. From this point on, Pinehurst grew rapidly as development took place around it. In 1867, General Averill Harlan sold 1/4 mile (1 km) of direct road from Fort Hill to what is now downtown Pinehurst for $2,500 This purchase allowed for commercial growth in the town which reached its peak during the late 1800s with an influx of farmers and businessmen who founded businesses such as banks, hotels, stores and schools. By 1910 there were over 100 businesses in downtown Pinehurst employing more than 600 people. During this time period many prominent citizens including Governor Francis Scott Key identified Pinehurst as their hometown and helped promote its growth by founding the town's first library in 1898 and creating its own civic organization—the Regional Arts Committee—in 1906 which still exists today During World War II much manufacturing activity took place within downtown Pinehurst thanks to munitions plants located along Interstate 85; however little residential development occurred because few people wanted to live near war factories . However during the Korean War some residents moved into nearby homes while others constructed temporary housing units called "doughboys" on private property adjacent to I-85 east of town

In 1875, two German entrepreneurs, August Weingart and Wilhelm Ritter, founded the first coffee company in what is now Frankfurt am Main. Coffee was not popular at the time and only lasted a few years before being replaced by beer. The company changed its name to Koffeehaus Fratzsch in 1876 and began producing coffee beans on site. In 1880, Koffeehaus Fratzsch merged with another coffee company, Lindt AG, creating one of the largest coffee companies in the world.
Pinehurst was founded in 1795 by Colonel John Johnston and his wife, Elizabeth. The Johnston family owned a large tract of land in what is now Pinehurst. In 1814, Colonel Johnston's son George became the first white settler at Pinehurst. George built a cabin on the present site of the town hall in 1814. One year later, he married Sarah Beattie and started to raise crops on their land. The couple had two children and gradually acquired more acreage until they had over one hundred acres. In 1827, they sold their holdings to Reverend Jephson for $5,000. Reverend Jephson began to build a small chapel on the original home farm where he died in 1846. The town of Pinehurst was platted on February 14, 1830 by commissioners Hance and McIntyre under an act of the General Assembly approved February 12th (1796). On October 8th (1830), Captain Wofford Post made his appearance before a justice of the peace at which time he announced that he had come from Great Britain with letters patent from King George III authorizing him to establish such an outpost as Fort Pines within this state “to protect our citizens from Indian attack” Captain Post remained at Fort Pines for about nine months until December 9th when he withdrew after learning that it would be necessary for him to leave for some other purpose because British forces were then occupying Yorktown Heights near Washington D.C.. After leaving Fort Pines Captain Post returned May 10th 1800 but without any letter or packet from England granting him authority to reopen Fort Pines; instead only verbal assurances were given through Major General Greene who commanded American forces besieging Yorktown Heights that no hostile action would take place while Commodore Perry was ashore guarding supply ships off Cape Henry – actions which occurred between October 15-December 3rd 1800 concurrent with Captain Post's visit Aftermath: On March 14th 1830 Lieutenant Colonel James Fayette Jones took oath as Mayor of Pinehurst according to Resolution Number 624a passed April 2nd 1830 On July 1st 1840 however Jones resigned after being accused of bribery by then Sheriff William Tryon during a local election campaign
