Pinehurst is a small town in Durham County, North Carolina, United States. The population was 2,524 at the 2010 census. Pinehurst is one of the oldest towns in Durham County and has been settled since 1768. The first post office in Pinehurst was established on April 15, 1814. It served as a stop on the Santa Fe Trail. The town was originally named "New Bern." In 1768, General James Johnston moved his headquarters from Wilmington to what is now called downtown Pinehurst after winning an arms race against Colonel John Tryon of Charlotte. Johnston renamed his new settlement New Bern because he had just become the governor of North Carolina following the death of Governor Thomas Tryon at Battle Creek on October 25, 1767. When Johnston's army retreated from Charlotte to Yorktown during the American Revolution, he left most of his supplies behind and ran out of food and ammunition. He therefore ordered his men to abandon their tents and march back into battle without eating or drinking for two days straight. Legend has it that one hundred men died from starvation or dehydration during that entire retreat; Johnston himself escaped capture by disappearing into Indian country with a band of Cherokee Indians known as The Creeks. Although some reports claim that he actually surrendered to British forces at Fort George instead, this event is generally considered to be mythical history by many Americans today due to its spurious nature (eBay item: "Forrest Gump Statue Lost At Battle Creek"). In 1865, Confederate General Jubal Early marched through central Durham County unopposed carrying off more prisoners than any other soldier in American history up until then-this move helped solidify North Carolina's pro-Southern leanings and made Pinehurst an early center for secessionist activity within Durham County (the town would later secede from North Carolina altogether)). After Early's surrender at Appomattox Court House in April 1865, much property within downtown Pinehurst reverted back to Union control including much of what is now Oakwood Drive/High Street/Pinehurst Elementary School complex which still stands today! That same year also saw the opening of Interstate 85 between Chapel Hill and Raleigh via mile marker 527 southbound near downtown Raleigh! A few years later this expressway would be expanded eastward eventually becoming I-95
