This building housed the court system for Buncombe County until it closed in 1995 and its functions were transferred to nearby McDowell County Courthouse. One ofpinehurt's most well-known residents, Drayton McLennan, was born and raised hereabouts before moving to Greenville, South Carolina, as an Army doctor during World War II when General MacArthur called on American soldiers to fight overseas. Afterward he returned to Pinehurst as president of McLennan Paper Company and died there two years ago after a long career with much service to his community

From its inception, Pinehurst was an agricultural town with heavy reliance on hogs and poultry for sustenance. However, during the late 1800s, industries began to grow in Pinehurst; these included manufacturing products such as textiles and boots, as well as lumbering and agriculture. In 1916, the town voted to create its own school system; this decision led to the growth of Pinehurst's social fabric over time. In recent decades, however, some residents have expressed concern about how much control local businesses have had over pinehurt-manufacturing production lines.
