Pinehurst is a small town in Henderson County, North Carolina. The population was 5,946 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Metropolitan Statistical Area. The downtown area of Pinehurst is home to a variety of shops and restaurants, including two banks and several fast food restaurants. In addition, there are several golf courses in the community. Pinehurst was first settled by English colonists in 1735 as a means of providing food for their troops during the French and Indian War. When that war ended, many colonists decided to stay and build homes on land they had acquired from the Indians. On July 1, 1781, when North Carolina became a state, Pinehurst became its capital city. The town has experienced various waves of growth throughout its history- it reached its current size in 1868 when it annexed nearby New Bern-Westminster after both municipalities voted to secede from Henderson County over disagreements about taxes. In 1907, Pinehurst adopted an ordinance forbidding residents from engaging in prostitution or soliciting customers for sex purposes without prior written consent from both parties involved; this ordinance remains in effect to this day. In 1933, Pinehurst established itself as an all-girls high school under then Superintendent Royce Jorgensen with the support of local businessmen and women who saw prostitution as detrimental to economic development in the town center; today (2009), girls can attend any secondary school within Henderson County that meets minimum requirements such as graduation rates and course offerings/portionate enrollment icons (see "secondary schools" below). The post office serving Pinehurst opened on October 15th 1865; at that time it was known as West Unionville Post Office because it served what is now eastern Henderson County only until 1861 when it service moved westward into western Beaufort County In 1902 Pineshire Ladies Auxiliary took over running West Unionville post office which closed on May 14th 1903 due to financial problems caused by women’s auxiliary members working outside their families’ home lives while still being self-sufficient financially . So Ladies Auxiliary continued operation until 1958 when they merged with US Mail Service which also ran post office here until 1978 when USPS donated property adjacent to new terminal building to establish UNC Asheville main campus so Asheville Post Office opened there instead
