It is the county seat of Rutherford County and home to Pinehurst University. The town was founded by Scots-Irish settlers in 1792. The first post office in Pinehurst was established in 1814. The name of the town may have been derived from a local tree, "Pinelandia virginiana". In 1839, three men named John Witherspoon, James Buchanan Randolph and Daniel Boone set out from Raleigh on their trip to find a new home for themselves and their families. After traveling through much of North Carolina they reached what is now Pinehurst on May 12, 1839. They named their new community after General Andrew Jackson's birthplace – Cumberland (now Davidson) County – because they thought it would be an appropriate place forJackson to live while he sought authorization to move westward as president of the United States. They were not correct; Jackson never moved westward and his successor never granted him permission to do so. However, since Pinehurst is located within present-day Rutherford County it has remained one of its most important towns everestablished in that county In 1865 the town had an estimated population of 2200 people when Confederate forces burned it during the raid on Raleigh which led to the Battle of Gettysburg After Reconstruction ended in America following World War I there were few opportunities for economic progress or resettlement so many Scots-Irish decided instead to emigrate back home In 1936 a group of citizens bought land east of downtown and began developing what would become Pinehurst into a residential area It wasn’t until 1957 that construction began on what would become known as “the Green Zone” which included all but four blocks east of Main Street The Green Zone became an important commuter/work area for residents near Interstate 95 as well as businesses located along I-95 between Chapel Hill and Durham Although originally built primarily for military use during World War II it eventually became popular with civilians as well who wanted easy access to education and shopping amenities without having to leave their homes As development expanded over time more houses sprang up around Interstates 95/85 interchange creating what today is known as “The Loop”
Pinehurst was founded in 1827 by Colonel James Fayette Pinckney, who named it for the pine trees that lined his property. In 1851, Pinehurst became a town after being chartered by the State of North Carolina. The town became an agricultural center and had a population of over 2,000 in 1912. In 1925, Pinehurst was annexed by Charlotte and lost its city status. It regained this status in 1951 when it merged with other towns in the area to become the City of Pinehurst. The City of Pinehurst is now one of the most diverse cities in North Carolina with over 60% black residents and over 20% Asian residents.
