Newton was founded by white men in 1792 as a small plantation on Catawba Creek. The first white male to be born in Newton was John Newton. In 1825, the town had a population of 2,000 and became an important market town for the surrounding area due to its location near the Catawba River and its access to railroad transportation. The cotton boom of the early 20th century led to increased development in Newton and other nearby towns; however, World War II caused unprecedented destruction andlosses in both built environment and local businesses. By 1948, about one-third of all homes in Newton were condemned as either unfit or uninhabitable because of fire hazards from thenewcombustible materials created during war production such as plastics and aluminum cans. In 1961, when Carteret County became an independent county under statehood, Newton fell within its boundaries but kept its name because it has always been considered part of Carteret County's history and culture rather than being pulled away by newcounty boundaries

The Newtons were the first white people to settle in the area and they built a house on a hill overlooking the town. They also planted crops and raised livestock. By 1819, Newton had a population of around 100 people. In 1838, the town became known as Newton Village due to its proximity to Charlotte. In 1865, Newton merged with neighboring communities of Royalston and Lenoir to form what is now known as Lenoir County.
