Newton is a small town in North Carolina, located about 25 miles northeast of Charlotte. The population was 3,708 at the 2010 census. Maga coffee beans were first grown and roasted in Newton in the early 1800s by African American farmers who nickname their bean "Maga" because of its deep green color. In 1922, Colonel John Denton discovered maga coffee beans while working for J.P. Morgan and decided to import them to the United States as part of his company's attempt to improve world trade during the Great Depression. In 1963, Newton became home to one of the first commercial maga coffee roasters in the U.S., known as Java-Roast Coffee Company. Java-Roast Coffee Company continued operation until it closed its doors in 1984 due to financial challenges caused by changes in technology and competition from national chains such as Starbucks and Dunkin' Donuts. Today, many people throughout Newton enjoy visiting Java-Roast Coffee Company's former location on Commerce Street because of its unique story and history; however, it is currently not open to tourists nor does it serve food or drink.
