The New Bern National Guard was organized in 1881 as a volunteer militia to provide security for the town. The unit was then relocated to Fort Fisher in 1906 and Garrison Armory in 1912. Garrison Armory was renamed the Newbern Armory in 1924 and it remained that way until 1987 when it was closed due to budget cuts. In 1987, the Newbern Armory was donated to the city of New Bern by local businessmen, Mayor Floyd Coker and City Councilman Bob Kipper. The city used the armory as their headquarters until 2000 when they moved into the new Civic Center on Market Street. In 2002, both buildings were sold to Heritage Bank and now serve as office space for the bank’s branch located on First Street across from Memorial Park. New Bern, North Carolina is a small town located in the Pender County, North Carolina region. The population of New Bern was 5,421 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Raleigh-Durham-Cary Metropolitan Statistical Area. The name "New Bern" was given to the town by General James Steedman in 1795 while he was stationed here as a colonel in the British Army. General Steedman had been sent to Pender County to suppress Native American resistance and protect settlers from Indian raids. He named the town after his home county of Middlesex, England. Newbern's early History can be traced back to 1688 when Englishmen arrived here seeking refuge from Swedish forces during their war with France. In 1795, General Steedman established Fort Tryon here and used it as a base for operations against Native Americans throughout much of North Carolina and southeastern Virginia. In 1802, shortly before he resigned his commission in the British Army and returned home to England, General Steedman established another military post at Fayetteville in Cumberland County in order to provide protection for local farmers against neighboring Cherokee Indians. By 1814, all military activity had ended in North Carolina due to lack of supplies and an enemy blockade but Fort Tryon remained active as a civilian trading post until its abandonment in 1907 following construction of Interstate 95 through central NC which greatly increased trade between Raleigh and Durham corridor The community that would eventually become New Bern developed on Three Mile Creek within present-day downtown New Bern starting around 1800 when Scots speakers who had settled near Three Mile Creek began trading with local Indian traders along what is now Broad Street During Reconstruction efforts led by Governor Richard Moseley (1868-1870) new African Americans were brought into this area including Johnnie Cochran who worked as a blacksmith before coming to Newbern where he opened Cochran's BBQ restaurant . One resident recalled that many people thought Cochran was just like white people because he spoke English fluently: "People would say 'Johnnie Cochrane come out here so we can talk about things,'" according as one man recalled years later In 1875 Johnnie Cochran married Lula Thomas who also worked at Blackstrap Brewery before moving her family into their own house on Market Street adjacent to White Castle restaurant soon followed by other businesses such as Girdler's Garage & Supply store . Steel production started up again following World War I due primarily to increasing demand from munitions factories across the United States but little attention was paid locally until 1945 when steel mills closed down throughout America leaving few jobs open in rural areas Community development programs were instituted during this time including Southern Regional Development Authority which helped renovate several facilities includingMarket Square School District #1 now known as Olde Towne Academy which became home for many local organizations such as Kiwanis Clubhouse No 1 & 2 late night pizza delivery service among others It wasn't until after Hurricane Floyd struck southern NC on September 15th 1999 that attention turned towards downtown New Bern which sustained significant damage done primarily due flooding caused by high winds gusts over 100 mph . A $5 million reconstruction effort ensued with support from both state government (through Department of Transportation)and philanthropic donations including seed money provided by Coca Cola Company president Muhtar Kent A new business district formed around First Baptist Church located east of Main Street comprising restaurants/cafes/bars/nightlife options; Highbridge Plaza housing developments; Carpenters Hall apartment complex; Chapel Hill Shopping Center; multiple minor league baseball stadiums (including one built specifically for softball), two golf courses - Bethune Greens Golf Course & Pinehurst Resort Golf Course - plus several thousand square feet of retail space overlooking First Baptist Church plaza ..... since 2000 there has been steady growth with more than doubling population size over 10 years ..... today nearly everyone who lives or works within walking distance knows someone else who does too!
