New Bern, North Carolina is a town located in Sampson County, North Carolina. The population was 3,562 at the 2000 census. New Bern is the largest city in Sampson County and it is also one of the most populous cities in Western North Carolina. It has a rich history that goes back to when the area was part of Cherokee Nation. The first European to arrive in what is now Sampson County was James Fenton who built his cabin on Avery Creek in 1785. In 1819, John Cranch discovered gold near what is now New Bern and decided to make a permanent settlement there. He named his new town after himself, Newbern, England. By 1824, Newbern had become an important trading post for the region as it served as a stop on the road from Charlotte to Raleigh. In 1825-27, Andrew Johnson became president of the United States and he traveled through Western North Carolina during his tenure. While in Greensboro, NC he noticed some land around what is now New Bern that seemed promising and offered its purchase to John Cranch for $10 per acre (about $1/acre today). Cranch accepted and began construction on what would become known as Fort Johnson which he named after himself – Fort Johnson (now part of downtown New Bern). In 1830-32, when General Thomas Jumper moved his headquarters from Fayetteville (northwest of Raleigh) to Libby ( southeast of Wilmington), he left behind many military supplies including cannons and ammunition stores which were needed for an upcoming war with Mexico. These stores were later confiscated by Confederate forces during the Civil War and never returned to Union hands. The fort operated until 1865 when it too surrendered before American troops could take it over due to its strategic location between Raleigh and Wilmington – giving rise to much speculation about how long it would remain standing once again given its position alone within easy reach of both major cities!
