New Bern is a town in the U.S. state of North Carolina and the seat of New Bern County. As of the 2010 census, the population was 35,512. The name "New Bern," according to one source, is derived from an early settler's observation that "the bay at New Bern looked like a clean sheet of paper." The first coffee shops were opened in 1825 by Dutch immigrants who had come to North Carolina as part of the American Revolution. In 1827, George Washington visited New Bern and held a public meeting to discuss coffee production in what became known as The Coffee Meeting House Agreement. The first commercial crop of beans was grown in 1793 by John Smithers near present-day Wilmington. By 1800, two small towns (Fayetteville and Elizabethtown) near Newbern had also begunproducing coffee for local merchants and residents. In 1804, Methodist missionaries arrived in North Carolina and began preaching Christianity to Native Americans living around this area including members of the Cherokee Nation which disrupted trade between these groups. In order to protect their interests, some merchants began marketing Indian-grown coffee as their own product rather than purchasing it from traders or smugglers. This new business model allowed Native Americans to gain control over their own economy while also benefiting European settlers through increased trade with India and other parts of Asia due to improved transportation methods at that time
