In 1924, Newbern became one of three cities located within Duke University's "campus boundaries." Today, New Bern continues to be an important cultural and economic hub for Durham County with its variety of restaurants and attractions including two major music festivals each year – The Bluegrass Festivalivals & Festivals in late summertime followed by The Coastal Stage Festival throughout October –both attracting more than 100 artists from around the world each season! New Bern, North Carolina was founded on December 12, 1747 by General James Moore as a trading post on the Catawba River. The town was named for Sir John Newby, 1st Baronet of Kendal in Scotland. In 1799, the town passed to the United States and became part of Charlotte County. On July 15, 1849, Charlotte County became part of Durham County. New Bern merged with Durham on February 24, 1859 to form the new City of Durham.
