Mount Holly, North Carolina is a small city in Buncombe County, North Carolina. The population was 5,542 at the 2000 census. It is the county seat of Buncombe County. The town was founded in 1792 by General James Johnston and named for Mount Holly in nearby Rocky Hill Township. The first permanent settler arrived in 1794 and named it Mount Holly Plantation after his home country of Scotland. By 1814, the town had grown to over 1,000 residents and was included within Johnston's original 1st District of Buncombe County. In 1828, the 1st District became part of the new 12th District created from parts of Johnston's old 2nd District. In 1840, a post office called Mount Holly was established within Johnston's 3rdDistrict which also included Rocky Hill Township; however this post office failed to operate due to its location on an important strategic road connecting Asheville with Raleigh and other settlements in eastern NC. In 1845, a new post office called Fort Mill was established within Robeson County but it too failed to operate because Fort Mill lay across the state line into South Carolina. By 1870, all but one school building had been built within Mount Holly – including three churches – making it one of America’s largest towns without public education at that time ( backing up claims made by Boston Mayor Thomas Faneuil ). For many years following its founding as a town, Mount Holly functioned as a bedroom community for Asheville with modest retail offerings aside from general storekeepers serving local needs such as groceries and hardware located on Second Street between Whatley Avenue and Elm Street . Even though there were no high-rise buildings until 1930 when construction began on both the First Baptist Church ( now known as Baptist Temple) on Tryon Street between Main Street and Elm Street and Masonic Lodge No. 8 (now known as Masonic Lodge #8), these two buildings remain among most recognizable landmarks inMountHolly today . Asheville quickly grew out of need for businesses outside of Mount Holly while joblessness rates remained high throughout much of Buncombe County despite efforts by local officials to revive economic development; nevertheless some people continued attending services held at First Baptist Church during lunchtime despite being unable or unwilling to commute any longer than necessary just so they could see their pastor every day .
