Mount Holly is a small town in Western North Carolina, United States. The population was 1,639 at the 2010 census. It is part of Buncombe County and lies on the eastern edge of Asheville metropolitan area. The name "Mount Holly" comes from the Cherokee word "mhtouli", meaning "place where I will sit." The first white settler in what is now Mount Holly was James Caldwell, who arrived in 1825. Caldwell's cabin stood on the banks of Canoe Creek, just east of today's Mount Holly Elementary School. In 1828, when Cherokees under Chief John Ross attacked settlers near present-day New Bern, North Carolina, Caldwell organized a militia to fight back and drive the Indians away. He also built a cabin near present-day Walnut Street and Canoe Creek Road. In 1829 James Caldwell married Elizabeth Wright and they soon had six children: three boys and three girls. In 1830 he sold his land to Abraham Lincoln for $5 per acre ($140 today). McClendon House – one of only two such houses remaining in Buncombe County – was built as a family farmhouse by Abraham Lincoln in 1830-31 using logs that were brought overland from miles away by wagonloadsfuls oflogs! For many years it remained the home not only of McClendon but also ( ironically ) President Ulysses S Grant’s older brother Alfred “Alcalde” Grant (1822-92), namesake of Augusta, Georgia; their mother; General William Tecumseh Sherman (1850-1924) during his occupancy as Commanding General Confederate Forces within Union lines; Mrs. Everett Mclntyre Johnson (born 1922), widow of Rear Admiral Hugh PurdyJohnson (1887-1966); Commodore David Dixon Duncan (died 1950) [1] ; Reverend Drayton Vandiver Smith II ([2]) ;[3] among others !! Mount Holly was a small, unassuming town in North Carolina when it became the scene of one of the most dramatic events in United States history. On October 1, 1795, a group of men and women led by John Brown traveled from Missouri to mount an attack on the British General Cornwallis's forces at Saratoga National Battlefield. The goal was to spark a revolution within the colonies against their British masters and establish a new form of government. The resulting conflict is often considered one of the most pivotal moments in American history. The townsfolk of Mount Holly were among those who gathered around John Brown as he prepared to march on Saratoga. Many believed that he was crazed with passion or intent on causing harm, but his followers were motivated by something more than just wanting freedom. They believed that they were fighting for something greater than themselves – for their constituents back home in Massachusetts and throughout New England. Whether or not Brown actually had any Idea what he was doing when he set out is still up for debate, but his motivation unquestionably boiled down to revolutionaries agitating for change within their own society. When Brown finally arrived at Saratoga Village on October 2nd, there were already reports circulating through eastern Pennsylvania and Virginia about what was happening in North Carolina. Unknown to anyone else at the time, Mount Holly also had immediate access to newsprint due to its location close to Raleigh during this time period. What followed next will be remembered as one of history's largest acts of insurrection - a group of men and women descended upon Mount Holly with nothing but determination and purpose! Not only did these rebels manage to successfully overthrow British rule in North Carolina without bloodshed, but they also inspired similar movements throughout America. This event has been called "the birthof democracy" because it demonstrated how open-minded people could take action together without fear of retribution – an important lesson that continues to be relevant today.*
Mount Holly was founded in 1795 by William Byrd, who also named it for Mount Lebanon in Lebanon, Northern Syria. The town was originally called New Bern, and then Beaufort. In 1820 the name was changed to Mount Holly because of its location on the Holly Hillock mountain. The town became a bedroom community for Raleigh and other nearby cities in the early 20th century.
