Mount Holly was founded in 1795 by John Nicholson, who named it for his home of Mount Holyoke. The town developed due to its proximity to the Carolina Railroad and its location on the banks of the Holston River. In 1876, Mount Holly became a city and was renamed after Julius Caesar's hometown of Rome.

There are also a number of businesses that have been situated in Mount Holly over time, including a grocery store (founded in 1925), a post office (founded in 1935), and two churches (one from 1868 and one from 1910). Despite these challenges, Mount Holly has managed to maintain some semblance of normalcy over the years despite being surrounded by large communities with more bustling activity. Mount Holly is a small town in Rutherford County, North Carolina, United States. The population was 1,780 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Charlotte-Mecklenburg-Durham metropolitan area. The first permanent settler in what would become Mount Holly was Nathaniel Harmon in 1772. In 1813, James Kenedy built a cabin here and named it after himself, Mount Kenedy. The town grew quickly around this business center; by 1830 there were three hotels and 100 residents. A school and two churches were founded in 1831; one for blacks and one for whites. The growth of Mount Holly slowed during the American Civil War because there was no market for cotton goods from fighter pilots based at nearby Charlotte or Fayetteville. However, by 1865 the town had acquired over 500 homes and businesses due to its position as a crossroads between eastern North Carolina and western Virginia. After Reconstruction ended in 1877, Mount Holly slowly lost its status as an agricultural center due to depleted resources and competition from more developed communities such as Cary and Huntersville. However, it regained some importance following Hurricane Floyd in 1996 which destroyed much of downtown Raleigh but spared Mount Holly completely In recent years, the economy of Mount Holly has been bolstered by new development around Interstate 85 (I-85) which linksCharlotte with Durham via I-95/I-485 traveling eastward through the heart of downtown Raleigh before turning north toward Chapel Hill on I-40/I-75/. This corridor has led to increased development near both exits including restaurants and bars that opened up along I-85B making it easier for people to get out into the historic district without having to go down Main Street "Mountain Home: A History of One Hundred Years" By 1953 when Wanda Hutchens published her book "A History of Appalachian People", she had already grown interestedcasually reading about mount holly while driving down i 95 past raleigh on my way home from work one day
