In 1785, Reverend James Caldwell bought land west of Buncombe Falls and founded what would becomeMount Holly. Caldwell's purchase included about adjoinship to modern day Hendersonville; however, most of today's settlement took place west of Hendersonville when that location became available during development along what is now I-40/I-240. In 1836, when Baptist Protestantism gained control over North Carolina's government and education system (a process known as "the First Great Awakening"), the new denomination ordered all churches within its borders to be torn down or converted into schools. The Reverend Samuel Rutherford issued a proclamation ordering all people living within two miles (3 km) of any Baptist church to leave their homes immediately or face execution. Churches that refused conversion were destroyed or converted into school buildings while those that complied were given compensation and allowed to keep their property. The first Methodist chapel built in Mount Holly was dedicated on December 10th, 1837 by Bishop John Cooke Sr..
