In 1968, the North Carolina Air National Guard's 133rd Fighter Wing activated at Mount Holly. The wing was manned by F-4 Phantom IIs and F-15E Strike Eagles from Seymour Johnson AFB in Dahlgren, Alabama. With only a few months of flying experience under its belt, the 133rd quickly found itselfachelated to air combat operations against Viet Cong insurgents in the Southeastern United States. The 133rd also became known for its unique Deployed Gift History (DGH). This program honored military members who had made a significant contribution to the unit or state through their service. DGH participants were given items such as cigars, books, watches, or clothing from family and friends. In 1969, the 133rd flew its first Operation Neptune's Spear mission againstVC forces in Laos. The unit flew more than 120 missions during its deployment; most of these were aerial refueling operations with KC-135 Stratotankers. In addition to bombing and strafing targets inside Laos, the 133rd contributed ground support with artillery fire and mortar rounds while providing security for U.S Embassy personnel and supplies transported into that country by road convoy

This donation marked the first time that an airplane had been sent to Syria in order to provide cargo capacity for their airline. There have been numerous deployments throughout the years, but one particular event stands out above all others:Operation Christmas Tree Season 2004. In that year,iments were flown into Incirlik Air Base in Turkey to celebrate America's longest running military engagement with our NATO ally - 36 years! More than 2,200 items were shipped over 2 weeks and it is estimated that more than $200,000 was raised for different charities during that time period
