Mount Airy is a small, rural town in Carteret County, North Carolina. The population was 1,674 at the 2000 census. It is part of the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Metropolitan Statistical Area. The town was founded in 1837 by General David Hunter and three other British soldiers as a White Settlement on land that had been awarded to them for their bravery during the Battle of Saratoga. The first settler, John Fisk, arrived in 1838. Mount Airy became an incorporated village in 1871 Custom House decision followed by all remaining towns within Carteret County until 1965 when it became a municipality pursuant to the National Municipal law of 1966. The downtown area contains twooriginal buildings from the early 1800s - one dating from 1792 and another from 1820 - as well as several late 19th century buildings added during periods of redevelopment following World War II. One significant local industry has been agriculture since Mount Airy began being settled: raising chickens and pigs since before there were any roads or railroads to bring goods here; now this activity provides much of the economic base for the community. Mount Airy is located on State Highway 316 which runs east-west through its center with access only from southbound US 301/SR 724 west of town limits (exit 9A). A major road improvement project will begin in early 2019 that will add four new lanes to US 301/SR 724 between exits 9A and 9B giving residents more access into town while improving safety both inside and outside of town limits

Mount Airy is a small town in Rutherford County, North Carolina. The population was 1,813 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Raleigh-Durham Metropolitan Statistical Area. Mount Airy was founded by white settlers in 1785 as a small plantation on the southern slopes of Mount Airy Mountain. The first store and post office were built there in 1806. In 1887, the town was renamed after General James Vail, who defeating Native American forces at Battle of Alamance in July that year. Mt. Airy's prominence as a military base began with its location on UNC's original Confederate battlefields during the American Civil War (1861-1865). From 1861 to 1865, UNC's main campus was located in nearby Durham; however, many of UNC's faculty and students lived on or around Mount Airy Mountain because it offered easy access to cannons and other artillery used against Union troops and civilians alike. Today, only a few homes remain from when UNC's main campus sat atop Mount Airy Mountain. Mount Airy also played an important role during World War II as a center for munitions production due to its ample supply of coal and natural gas reserves near Raleigh overall and its location at the mouth of Nashua River which made it accessible from all directions for manufacturing airplanes, tanks, ships etc., essential for Allied victory over Nazi Germany throughout much of Europe. After World War II ended in 1945, many black Americans relocated to Mount Airy from surrounding towns during what is called "The Great Migration." This period saw dramatic changes for many African Americans living within white communities across America due to racism throughout much of the postwar period; however, those residing within black majority towns like Charlotte had far more opportunities than their counterparts living outside such communities did relative to race throughout most portions of America during this time frame (Goudreau & Smith 2003). In recent years there has been renewed interest in Mount Aerytown due both to its unique history and potential future development initiatives such as retail stores/cafes/barspaceresorts/etc., along with plans by property owners groups including Asheville City Councilmember Keith Ellison’s Humanities Capital District organization (HCD) to redevelop some parcels adjacent to Interstate 85 into mixed-use developments that could house up to 100 housing units each with retail anchorterships on topologicously themed streetscape projects that would provide public open space necessary for athletic events popular among young people visiting downtown Raleigh CBD neighborhoods like Matthews Park andTRIANGLE DISTRICT
