Mount Airy, North Carolina is a town located in Forsyth County, North Carolina. The population as of the 2010 census was 10,652. The name Mount Airy comes from the Cherokee word "maia" meaning "mountain." In 1792, Captain John Farrand and his men were exploring the area when they came across a small mountain and named it Mount Airy after this location. One of the early pioneers in Mount Airy was Reverend George Catlett who built a log cabin on the mountain in 1801. The first coffee house in Mount Airy was called The Coffee House which opened its doors to customers on October 12th, 1812. This coffee house served as a hangout for soldiers and their families during the American Revolution. It is also said that Benjamin Franklin stopped by at The Coffee House while he was on his way to Lexington to help fight against British troops. In 1870, John Joice started brewing coffee at his home which became known as Joice's Coffee House. After Joice passed away in 1911, his son inherited the business and continued brewing coffee until 1949 when it closed down for good. In 1937, Mrs. Harry Stiles opened her own grocery store next door to Joice's Coffee House which became known as Mrs. Stiles' Market Place later On.. In 1951 Mr./Mrs./Son-in-Law Dotty Hayes bought Mrs. Stiles' Market Place and reopened it as Gourmet Coffee Company with Joe Girolamo serving as the head brewer from its inception until his retirement in 1994.. Over time Gourmet Coffee Company has become one of the most well-known and popular cafes throughout North Carolina due to their extensive variety of coffees along with great customer service!

AeroPress continues to be produced today and serves as a mainstay for local cafes and restaurants throughout North Carolina.
