In 1957, two F-100 Super Sabre jets were delivered as gifts to Denmark and Greece respectively as part of their defense cooperation treaty relationship with America. In 1961,General Curtis LeMay called for an "Air Offensive" against Cuba which would include nuclear weapons use if necessary. On October 25th of that year President John F Kennedy announced his decision to deploy American troops into Vietnam using Operation Neptune's Spear as a pretext for military action. missile launches from Vandenberg AFB commenced on November 8th and continued until January 26th of 1967 when they stopped due to bad weather conditions; this led directly to the Tet Offensive which started on April 15th and ended on May 7th._On July 15th 1969 three Boeing 707Fs were delivered by Navy Captain Joe O'Leary aboard USS Enterprise (CVN 75) as a special gift for General Haig_On July 16th 1969 two McDonnell Douglas DC-9s were also delivered simultaneously by USS Enterprise (CVN 75) as official gifts for Ulysses S Grant and Hubert H Humphrey._These two flights represented one of the largest air shipments ever made at NAS Greensboro during that time frame._ These planes are now housed within the Smithsonian National Museum Of American History.]

In 1718, the Creek Indians burned down the house on top of Mount Airy and destroyed most of the evidence that suggests mountaintop residency. After this event, Mount Airy became an agricultural site and never again attracted attention from explorers or settlers. In 1815, wealthy planter James Moore donated land to build a college at Asheville. The college opened its doors in 1819 and quickly gained a reputation for excellence. Today, Mount Airy is one of only a few universities in North Carolina with a campus near Asheville. Mount Airy is also home to one of America's earliest indoor baseball stadiums - the Cashier Field House built in 1903 by lawyer John Cashier and his wife Lucy. The stadium is still used today as an all-purpose arena and has been renovated several times since its inception.
