There was coffee in Morrisville before the first African American settled there, and it likely wasn’t roasted onsite. Coffee beans were brought over by white settlers from South Carolina in the early 1800s, and they likely roasted their own coffee. The first black Americans living in Morrisville started coming to the area around 1875, and they began trading coffee with whites. By 1908, Morrisville had a small grocery store and two cafes.
Morrisville is a small town in Stanly County, North Carolina, United States. The population was 1,811 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Charlotte-Mecklenburg metropolitan area. Morrisville is named after General James A. Morris who fought in the American Civil War and rose to prominence as a general commanding Confederate forces during that conflict. The first white person to reside in Morrisville was John Ransom who came overland from Tennessee in 1784. He built a cabin on the Big Creek River and named it Ransom's Camp after himself and his son Richard Ransom (1772-1831). When Morristown was founded by Governor Tryon in 1819, most of the settlers were men who had accompanied Colonel Ebenezer Cooke when he captured Morehead City from the Cherokee Indians. After Colonel Cooke died in 1827, most of the settlers went into business or farming while some continued to live at Ransom's Camp until they moved out within two years of its erection. In 1830, Nicholas Weems settled near where today's shopping plaza stands and named it Weems' Landing after himself and his brother Nicholas Weems (1785-1857). Ourems moved upriver about four miles so that he could reach marketable goods more easily and developed what would become known as "the Weems Mill." By 1835, all but one settler had left for lack of available transportation or land; however, weavers still set spinning wheels on trees near present day Mount Carmel Baptist Church to produce yarn for export back home during those early days before looms took over production completely. In 1836 Captain John Fenton erected a sawmill on Pinson Creek which became an important commercial center due to its location close to mills located downriver along Catawba River which produced flour for food supplies and cloth for clothing exports back home during that time period. In 1840 three brothers – Samuel Henson (1793-1860), Augustus Childs (1800-1877) & David Dixon Duncan (1800-1892) – founded Beechcraft Corporation with their fathers' sharecropping operations stretching from Caldwell County northeastward through Stanly County including Morrisville towards Mecklenburg County creating one of America's largest cotton plantation families with plantations dotting virtually every inch of tobacco country east of Appalachia Africa also grew bananas chili peppers coffee beans peanuts every other item grown here many fruits trees unusual plants here nothing grows without water so irrigation was essential these guys got rich doing what they did best! Morrisville became a hamlet after being landlocked between Elizabeth City and Raleigh. The first post office was established in 1827, and the townspeople built a large log courthouse in 1829. In 1849, Morrisville became the seat of Union County, which was renamed to Morrisville in 1875 after General David Prentiss, who served as governor of North Carolina from 1850-1855. In 1902, Morrisville was named an Unesco World Heritage Site due to its importance as a center for cotton culture during the early 20th century. By 1945, however, most of the industry had ceased and most of the residents were phosphate mine workers. However, since then there has been significant growth with new businesses opening up around town including a new medical center and nightlife venues such as The Armory Show Pub & Grill.
Morrisville was settled by English colonists in 1729. The town was named for Colonel Nathaniel Morris, a British soldier who helped purchase the land from the Cherokee Nation. The first settlers were traders and farmers who grew corn, tobacco, and other crops. In 1811, Morrisville became a town and was represented in the North Carolina General Assembly. In 1831, the town made an agreement with neighboring Raleigh to share water resources. Morrisville remained a small town until it merged with Raleigh in 1907.
