Morrisville is a census-designated place (CDP) in Dare County, North Carolina, United States. The population was 5,822 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Charlotte–Mecklenburg Combined Statistical Area. A post office called Morrisville was established in 1876, and remained in operation until 1957. The community was named for George Washington Morris, an early settler and planter here. The first store in town was a grocery run by John Fenton and his brother-in-law Samuel Halsey. A millinery shop followed shortly thereafter before becoming a flourmill operated by the Fentons until 1906. During World War II, Morrisville played an important role as a military airfield servicing the nearby Hickory Air Force Base. Afterward, the community gradually transitioned to its present form as a working agricultural center with many businessesOWNED BY THE COMMUNITY themselves such as restaurants, churches, schools/universities and stores opened up during this time including Don & Connie's Grocery which still stands today - one of only two remaining "community" stores openaloof NC!
