Morrisville is a small town in North Carolina, United States. The population was 1,898 at the 2010 census. It is part of Granville County and is located on the eastern border of Raleigh-Durham. Morrisville was founded in 1802 by Captain John Morrison, who named it for his father, Morristown. The first store in Morrisville was opened in 1814 by Wm. Fenton and Jno. Burleigh. The town developed around a cotton gin and gristmill which were built beginning in 1820 by John Capps and Arthur Ashe respectively. In 1849, Ackerfield Packing Company bought the mill from Mr. Ashe and renamed it the Ackerfield Packet Mill after its founder, Alfred Ackerfield Sr.. The first post office opened in Morrisville on February 14, 1852 under the name of Salisbury; it closed on December 17th of that year due to low mail traffic. The townspeople decided to rename themselves after General Andrew Jackson because he had been their hero during the American Revolution (the only U S president to be honored with a local post office). In 1865, Morrisville became one of nine towns incorporated into Raleigh as part of an effort to promote growth within the city limits. At this time, many residents relocated from rural areas into Raleigh following Reconstruction efforts which aimed to rebuild America following its devastating Civil War conflict). As Raleigh began expanding rapidly into what would become downtown Durham (it had only just begun annexing adjacent neighborhoods like Chapel Hill), Morrisville slowly lost its importance within the city limits as more people moved closer to larger metropolitan centers inside Raleigh or outside Durham altogether - until finally becoming completely defunct within city limits when Raleigh annexed all but two blocks of Morrisville between 1984 and 1990 inclusive).
