This violence climaxed when Local Policeman William Gist arrived at a farm house early one morning expecting assistance from owner Mr Chilton but instead found nine men inside taking hostages while four womenand children ran outside screaming for help before being shot dead by Gist who killed two men before fleeing without acquiring any information leading many people believe he may have deliberately caused these murders rather than helping out those whom he thought were under siege

A grocery store and post office were also built in that year. In 1830, Morrisville became the county seat of Burke County. In 1850, the county seat moved to Raleigh. In 1886, Burke County merged with Durham County to form Wake County. Morrisville remained the county seat until 1959 when Raleigh became the official state capital.
